Textures not working

Postby ali2013 » Mon Dec 17, 2012 11:52 pm

I have tried some textures on Inkscapes. Many of them are not working.

I made a rectangle, go to "Filter", apply a texture but it makes the rectangle disappears. For example, the texture "Bark" is not working I think and some of the rest.

Try it to see if its working for you... Waiting a feedback!

It will help us to know what operating system, and version of Inkscape you are using.
I am using Linux mint/Cinnamon with Inkscape 0.48.3.1r and for me some things, like info boxes dont display properly. Filters usually work , but not always, and some extensions have trouble.
It's one of the many joys of using a development build, you get lovely new features, but a few bugs that will need to be worked out later as well.

Hello
I 'm in win 7 with inkscape 0.48.0 r r9654 (As it says in the splash screen that appears in menu:help - option: about )

It happens to me too. But sometimes it disapear

I have the problem with 2 textures: bark and stonewall, the others seems right

With "bark", sometimes works fine and sometimes not.
mmmm It's difficult to point where is the error

EDIT:
I got something. In maximized window, with zoom to the page. I draw a path and then apply texture"bark". The path disappears. Then I click in the zoom to selection icon.
And the path appears with the texture!. Something similar with the stonewall texture
If you have problems:
1.- Post a sample (or samples) of your file please.
2.- Please check here:

I am on Vista Home Premium 32 bit. Some textures are not working and Inkscape turns slow when applying some filters. Other people I know are getting the same issues

Those filters are pretty darn confusing sometimes! And it can be like pulling teeth sometimes, getting info from those who do know much about them. But for this particular problem where they seem not to show up, I can say that with some, if not most filters, the object has to already have a color, before you can see the result after applying it.

Other times, the problem seems to come from what's called the Filter Effects Region being set up improperly. That was something that the creator of the filter missed. And while you can change it yourself, I wouldn't advise it, unless you know something about making filters.

The situation that hulf2012 explained might be caused by too low settings in Inks Prefs > Filters. Try moving up a notch for both Gausian Blur and Filter Effects. Or, it might be a known issue with Inkscape's renderer. It's hard to say for sure, since I haven't experienced exactly what's described.

Oops, ali2013 posted again while I was typing. It's not unusual for Inkscape to be slow with filters. You can also probably expect some crashes. Usually this is made worse by computers which are low on RAM (low meaning 2 gb or less). Inkscape 0.49 will have a new renderer which is expected to help with a lot of these performances issues that we see now. For now, try to avoid large file sizes, and especially try to avoid zooming with filters. You can use layers to hide the filter content, or use View menu > Mode > Outline, to temporaily disable the filters to increase performance. There may be a couple of tips I've forgotten, but you can search the forum. They've all been discussed many times before!

LOL 2GB is low! By the way, can I add filters? I mean create my own? If yes, how to add it?

Yes you can create new filters all by yourself. The only instructions I know are in the manual :D

You can add your own filters, seems like there was a thread on here about a filter someone made called Country Shading, or maybe I got it off of Youtube, can't remember. But, it was easy to do, I simply took the svg file where the filter had been set up and saved it in the Inkscape filter folder, then re-booted the pc and now it's in the default, even after I upgraded to the latest version of Inskcape recently (yep, I ugraded late). If I can find it, I'll come back and post the link.

EDIT - as usual my memory is shot (showing my age again), it's not from either place. The site is VSD (Very Simple Design), and it's a site that Brynn posted about awhile back (thx Brynn). This will tell you how to load it, I love this filter, use it alot actually.
