[solved] Transparancy issue with Vista Sidebar

Postby NoGi » Wed Sep 17, 2008 10:44 am

Hi all,

I recently obtained an image from a designer in InkScape. I want to use it in my Vista Sidebar Gadget. the problem I am having is that when I use the exported image, the edges are really rough and look extremely messy.

I have tried the following with no success:
* Grouped all images and then export
* Exported at 300DPI with no difference
* Exported with no image shadow
* Googled for InkScape transparency issues with Vista (I assumed this forum is indexed by Google as well :?: )

Any suggestions?

regards,
Nogi

Could you show us a screenshot? Assuming you exported as PNG, this shouldn't be an Inkscape-specific problem.

Example of image (see the bottom):

I can export PNGs from Adobe Photoshop and they work fine, just can't export from InkScape. If I could get it into Adobe I could export from there but not sure if thats possible (very new to this product)

Edit:
Finished my sentence, keyboard ran out of battery

does the PNG look ok in other software?

It looks like the gadget doesn't support alph-transparency, but that's just a guess.

It looks funny in FireFox 3 as well. May be the alpha transparency which explains why it looks ok on the Mac. Is it possible to remove that and use some other transparency? I also have photoshop and illustrator if that helps.

Can you post the PNG for us to see? I would expect FF3 to display it fine.

Apologies, yes it does display correctly under FF3. It was IE6 that I was thinking off. But Vista Sidebar definately can't display correctly. The actual PNG is:

Ok, here is something wierd. If I change the background colour to something like:

it works perfectly. Only on that original image with the colour I want, it doesn't.

Weird. Try opening the PNG in Photoshop, then using "Save for Web and Devices" on the File menu to export as a 24-bit PNG. Maybe this will reset something in the file that is broken...

I don't see any problem with the PNG file, so it's probably a Vista problem.

Champion, that fixed the problem. If i do a Save As and pick PNG it stuffs up, if I Save for web... it works like it should. :D

Thank you very much.
