Download impossible W7
Download impossible W7
I had Inkscape running nicely on my laptop, and then a purchase of Micrsoft Office Professional including IE9 wrecekd it all... Today tried downloading Inkscape again - and hey, it won't! I get a string of error messages saying: exe system errors then Lib.magic+++3 missing, can't open the program... HELP? Bright ideas anyone?
Re: Download impossible W7
Hi Annelise,
I don't know much about this kind of thing. But the first thing I'd do, is uninstall the new programs, temporarily, to find out if Inkscape will work once again. Or on Windows, of course there's System Restore, but I really think that should be a last resort.
Did you say IE9? What kind of computer is this? Because the current IE version, I think is 11. So if this computer has less than say 1.5 gb RAM, Inkscape would only be able to handle relatively small files anyway. I guess by "W7" you mean Windows7? So you must have at least 2 gb, I'd guess.
So you already had Inkscape installed and working, when you installed MS Office Pro, etc.? Were you downloading and installing Inkscape again, just in an effort to get it working again? I mean, installing those things would not affect Inkscape, at all, as far as I know. So you wouldn't necessarily need a fresh installation. Or I should say "shouldn't".
If you're still having trouble (I realize I'm answering over a week later. I'm just not around here much lately.) ....well, anyway we can only really help with Inkscape. But if you could post the exact, word for word error message, maybe someone here will recognize it. And be sure and say where the error message is coming from (look at the titlebar, if it's coming in a small window or message box). So for example, is it an error from Inkscape, or Windows? And also, please say exactly when it happens, or what was the last thing you did when the error message came up.
When you installed Office and IE9, I guess they would have been installed to C:/Program Files, because I would guess there are 64-bit versions of them. And you realize that Inkscape doesn't have an official 64-bit version, correct? So it needs to be installed in C:/Program Files (x86). Also, you uninstalled your previous Inkscape, before you tried to install the new one, right?
Ok, well that's all I can think of. Let us know if you still need help
PS -- 1 more question. Did you download the installer file, or a 7zip file? Or maybe the unofficial (although stable) 64-bit version?

Re: Download impossible W7
MS Office or IE have a habit of stealing svg file type. Maybe that's the problem.
Or your computer is just full of virus/malware and turns any downloaded file into another virus package.

Re: Download impossible W7
Grobe, what do you mean about MS office and IE stealing svg file type?
I don't hear any evidence of possible malware problem, in the brief op. Although I suspect they've given up, and no longer waiting for reply anyway.

Hi.
On my work computer, I must have IE installed, and IE need to be set as default web browser due to an application that may not work without it.
From my own experience, I know that when I make IE the default reader, IE also tends to "steal" the svg file type, so that all SVG files opens in IE instead of the program I might prefer to open in.
However, it's still possible to open SVG files from within Inkscape, or drag'n/drop'em to the Inkscape shortcut on desktop.
I would like to hand over the registry key you need to delete in order to prevent IE svg files to opens in IE (I did it just today at work) but sadly I sits on another computer now and can't recall the name of registry key to delete.
Go ahead and search for keys wich have a name that includes "svg" and you'll find. Just don't go crazy and delete too much (I don't take any responsibility for any unfortunately events)
