I have been trying for month to make the workarea larger. By that I'm talking about that rectangle sitting in the middle of the screen.

Please somebody tell me how to make it a size to suit me. Thanks.

File>Document Properties (Shift + Ctrl + D)

You can fit to content or choose the size in pixels, inches, etc.

Press the '5' key on the main keyboard - if you use the keypad make sure it's in 'Num-Loc' mode.

By the way - the '3' key maximizes the selected object(s) to fill the screen - can be quite handy as well.
