I have a UC-Logic drawing tablet with a pressure sensitive pen on WinXP. Tablet works in other applications. Touching the pen tip to the tablet is the same as a mouse left click.
Using mouse I can start Inkscape, click on the freehand drawing tool, then click and drag the mouse around in the drawing area to draw a free for line.
However using the Touch pad I can start Inkscape, tap on the freehand drawing tool (which appears to work) BUT when I try to draw in the drawing area no line appears. The messages at the bottom of the drawing area change like they do when drawing with the mouse, but no line shows up.
Once I've used the tablet, then the mouse has the same problem. If I start Inkscape fresh and use the mouse then I can draw as expected. But as soon as I try to use the tablet then the mouse acts the same, no line when drawing.

Re: Drawing Tablet problem.
Couple of questions,
1. does it happen if you use the tablet prior to loading inkscape? Reason I ask is because my wacom has weirdnesses if I havent used it at all before I load inkscape, if I use it beforehand tho its fine.
2. Does the tablet show up under file>input devices?
Cheers

Yes. I can also stop and restart Inkscape, then it works fine with the mouse until I touch the tablet. I don't even have to click or anything with the tablet, just move the stylus so it moves the cursor instead of the mouse. When in this mode, I can start Microsoft Paint, and both the mouse and tablet work as expected in that and other applications, where the tablet and mouse both work as expected (like a mouse). In Inkscape while it is having this problem with the tablet, other mouse functions still work as expected with the tablet, for instance, I can still tap the stylus on file menu and open it.

Yes, but the mouse does not.
Also sometimes the drawing coordinates seen to go crazy while using the stylus in the drawing area like it is continuously scrolling past the edge of the drawing.

Re: Drawing Tablet problem.
UC Logic? I wonder if they were previously MG Logic - I had a MG Logic tablet from 98/2000 days but couldn't get XP drivers, so bought a Wacom more recently.
I just wanted to quickly suggest downloading newer drivers. If that doesn't help, try testing on a different PC to see if the problem still exists. If it does you might like to head to the developers mailing list for support. Although be aware that it may be difficult for the developers to fix if they don't have a tablet to test with.

Yup, downloaded the latest driver, July '07, before trying it out.

If I'm reading the forum correctly, I think you are a site Admin. If this conversation needs to be in a different forum is there anyway you could move it to the correct place where the developers would see it? (and let me know where that was <grin>)
I'd be willing to send one of them my graphics tablet to play with if it comes down to that and if they promise to send it back. I haven't had time yet to try installing Inkscape on my wife's PC to see if I can duplicate the tablet problem...
In a few days I may be able to test the same thing with the latest Ubuntu and the same tablet, assuming it is all recognized under linux.
Thanks, Cla.

This is an "unofficial" forum. Refer to Reporting Bugs for how to report issues to the developers.
Re: Drawing Tablet problem.
I have the exact same issue with a Genius Pentablet, it happens the same........ I have the W7 drivers but I assume that since this is an XP based tablet and a tad old, it has issues with Inkscape due to this "oldiness".
Just a quick guess....
