I have created a round cornered rectangle and exported the image as .png. When I used the image on a website, the edges around the corners are not transparent. For example, if the web page background is green and the inside of the rectangle is white, the small edges out side the corners show as white instead of the green. I was under the impression that .PNG files are trasparent. Please let me know how to resolve it.

IE has poor support for transparent PNGs. More recent versions are better, but I believe even IE8 has its quirks. So if you're using IE, try a different browser.

If you find the corners are indeed not transparent, make sure your Inkscape document has a transparent background (under File > Document properties).

Did you save as "Cairo PNG" or use 'File > Export bitmap…'?

'File > Export bitmap…' is recommended for high-quality bitmap exports (PNG) from Inkscape. The background of the exported PNG file is transparent unless you changed color and/or transparency of the document (canvas) background in 'File > Document Properties > Page: Background'.

Thanks for the clarifications. Inkscape correctly exports the .png files with transparent corners. But somehow my image slicer program (ImageCut) makes the corners opaque, even when the cut file type is .png!

Why not slice from Inkscape?

Actually I am looking for how to slice from Inkscape, but couldn't find a good reference. Please let me know if there is a good link.

I know there's a tutorial somewhere, but I can't remember where I saw it. Try searching Tricks and Tutorials forum. And meanwhile, maybe someone else will remember it as well (and know where it is)....
