how would I make a logo where the company name was bounded by an ellipse? An excellent example would be the logo for the National Hot Rod Assn NHRA. I need the text to fit the contours of the ellipse as the company name will take up the entire space.

you can use the Perspective Extension to distort each letter into the final oval shape, similar as in this video

Modify each letter by hand, node by node, after converting to paths. No automatic method will do it as well, in as short a time.
The perspective extension is particularly the wrong tool to use for this, and if you have to use an extension the Envelope extension or its LPE counterpart would be the more appropriate choice.

Why not just using text on path?
Do you need to distort each of the letters, rotating them wouldn't be enough?

Probably because of individual differences in the interpretation of the word 'work?.

EDIT:
I got a nice result by using the Bezier Envelope Extension on individual letters, with very little node editing. Font is 'Bedini'.
