First topic: I miss easier controls for guides

Postby ken » Fri Sep 08, 2017 5:46 am

Greetings, I'm Ken!

I'm interested in Inkscape, and something I didn't find yet is a quick and productive way of setting up guides and measure distances between them.
In Fireworks, I could see the related distances between the guide I was moving and the other guides by holding Shift down.

What do you think about it? Is it just something I'm missing? How do Inkscape users normally centralize things, make measurements relative to guides and get everything to be symmetrical? Because the measurement tool looks interesting, but when I select another tool, the measurement I made disappear.

You can keep the measurement when you click on the camera icon.

I usually use the align+distribute dialog for centering things.
For symmetry, depends. Tiled clones, polar arrangement, mirror lpe, rotate copies lpe can all help with that. Depends on your use case.

I don't usually measure a lot.

Automated guides creation is possible via extensions, e.g. https://github.com/sambody/inkscape-guide-tools
Or you can even create guides from objects (Object to guides).

I think everyone develops their own preferences over time.

I'm not clear if you've found this yet. If you double-click on a guide, you can set the precise coordinates, color, angle (and label, if you need). There's a checkbox for Relative Change, if you don't want to calculate the real coordinates. So for example, you could move a guide 125 px to the right, or whatever. And finally they can be locked.

You can actually rotate the guides on the canvas, but it might be hard to set a specific angle that way. Anyway, hold Shift when the mouse is over the guide, and you'll see the pointer icon change, which indicates you can press the mouse button and rotate that guide. It rotates around the anchor point.

It should be easy to find info on guides in the manual. Help menu > Inkscape manual

Plus everything else Moini mentioned :D

Thank you, Moini and brynn, for the answers.

Moini, I'll try the things you mentioned. But concerning inkscape-guide-tools, I tried to use it yesterday, but it didn't work in my Inkscape. The dialog shows up in Extensions > Guides > Add centered guide to Page or Selection, I select an object, select the option "Add centered guides to the selected object" in the combo box, apply, but nothing happens, the guides are not created.

brynn, I am currently doing what you mentioned, double-clicking the guides and doing the relative displacement, it's the best option I have so far. But still, I wish there was something more productive. But until I find it, I'll continue doing that.

Moini, the Align and Distribute feature is great, thanks for pointing it out.

Mmh. It appears that the guides are created, but not at the correct position for the object, in 0.92.2.
It seems to have suffered from the unit change in made in Inkscape 0.92.

What you can do as a workaround would be to:
- set document units to px
- set 'scale' to 1 (this will shrink the contents of your drawing - make sure you make a note of which size it needs to be, to be able to resize afterwards, as a group).

Then the extension still works as before.

Can you make a bug report ('issue') for this in the extensions github repository?
