Is there any way to remove this feature? It's a pain selecting a font, then having to scroll all the way back down to where I was if I want to select a different one.

I totally agree (but I see a different solution: don't mark the font as selected in the extra list, but at its original position, so if you want to newly select a font, you can either look into the list at the top, or switch through the list one by one, and try them out.), this is a really annoying feature for how I work. I think there's a bug report for it somewhere. Can you have a look at the reports at https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape ? If you don't find one, you can make one. I'll certainly add myself as a supporter there! (if you find one, can you post the link here?)
