is it possible to resize the textbox without scaling the text in it?

I know about the "flow into frame" but that is one action more to perform (making the frame).

When creating your text object, instead of just clicking and typing, click-and-drag a box for your text. This creates a frame for the text without having to create the frame separately and then associate it to the text. Then if you want to change the size of the frame, select the text object and choose the text tool (F8). You'll see the frame and can resize it with the handle in the lower right corner.

That is the reason I tried resizing it with the Text Tool and failed before, as I only a clicked and entered text (which of course then did not go) and did not make a text box first.

wow, this helped me so much!!! When I pasted text, I couldn't resize properly, because there was no "word wrap" option... This saved my life (at least a part of it )!

I'm sorry, this is the answer to exactly what I want to do but I don't understand what you mean by "click and drag a box" - EXACTLY what would I do, please?

ETA: I did select the Text tool, click on the workspace and draw a blue box, as per the instructions. Figured that out. Then I started typing text and I got a straight horizontal line of text, it didn't wrap in the box I had created. I also had a hard time seeing the box after I had created it!

However when I took a text box and said "Flow into Frame" I could see the frame, and I could resize it, and the text would wrap (but not scale) when I did. Which is exactly what I wanted...so I guess I'm all set.

I'm sorry if I dumb this down "too" much, but if you're not familiar with the term "click and drag" I feel it's perhaps neccessary to ensure there's no confusion.

There are two basic method of using the mouse with to create a text object. "Click" and "Click and drag".

1. Click - Press the left mouse button and release it instantly. Doing so with will create a text object where a line of text will continue on a single line until you press Enter
2. Click and drag - Press the left mouse button and continue to hold it down whilst you move your mouse, then release the left mouse button. Doing this with (and pretty much any other shape tool) will allow you to define a rectangle area for your text. Your text will automatically wrap onto a new line when it reach the right edge of the rectangle area.

But how about resizing existing text box?
If it has many text attributes it might be desirable not to loose a text you have already entered which box needs to be resized.

If you made a text box without the click-and-drag technique, I don't think you can resize it. You could try using the click-and-drag method to create a new text box, and copy and paste the text from the previous one.

Maybe I'm interpreting this incorrectly but I don't see how GIMP could expect you to know the exact size of a text box that you will need before you enter the text. If you create too small or too large a text box then you have to start all over?

I went thru all the menus and couldn't find an option to "flow into frame".

It's listed in the "Text" menu.

what you can do is to draw a box with no stroke or fill around your existing text. Then select both the box and the existing text and click "Flow into Frame" in the "Text" menu
