Metalhead Union

Postby MetalMusicAddict » Sun Nov 30, 2008 9:34 am

So I've seen a "Headbangers Union" t-shirt and thought "I could do better.".

So I started tinkering:

I got many ideas but don't know which direction to go. The middle with the map is mostly bothersome atm.

(please try to comments to design and not about the metal genres) :P

I'd try a map without the borders, as the current one is a bit visually cluttered. I'd also change the size (and maybe font?) of the text in the black ring as its kinda getting lost in there at the minute. Nice start tho.

Yeah. That was my issue with the middle also. I found a nice SVG to use without borders on Wikimedia.

Agreed on the size.

Thanx. I'll post another shot in a few.

Updated. I still don't like the map in the middle. It needs something.

I'd go solid rather than outline, and delete some of the smaller islands and so forth to clean it up...

Yeah. Makin' it solid was the way to go. I still feel there's too much negative space above/below the map. I think that's what's bothered me. I like the map but it just doesn't have enough weight.

***MetalMusicAddict ponders some more.

I agree. I think it would make a big difference.

Could you get a map that is looking down on the globe from a point above the north pole that would give you a lot less negative space. Or warp and simplify the map more the ad some longitude and latitude lines. I see people do that a lot to deal with the space issue.

I think the issue I'm havin' is it's not, "metal" enough. But I don't want to lose the map as I feel it says "international". Later I will play with a color version but for now I'm trying to just get the elements right.

A skull? (sounds cheesy) The "metal hands"? (can't find one I like) I'm a bit blocked.

Much improved over the first version. The solid black works. Maybe put a pentagram in there somewhere. Maybe as a map compass rose, or make the spikes behind everything into a pentagram. I think it would make it more 'metal'

I'll tinker with that.

It was one (filled it in) but the weight didn't feel right.

In the end I'm trying to say metal without being "cheesy".

It looks good in itself but my only comment would be that there is not much about the logo that screams out METAL!.
I would be trawling the net for some seriously stereotyped images of raging head bangers in full metal regalia. For inspiration...

What ever it is you do it should say METAL with out having to be read...
I would love to see a motif some how portraying a serious Metal head stereotype.
Something that typifies your headbanger! A Metal logo needs some serious double kick! LOL
Thats just what i would like to see... your logo looks fine otherwise.

As metalheads are as diverse as this great world of ours, I'm not going the "Heavy metal parking lot" route with this logo. ;)

I'm going for something closer to a normal union seal.

Can you design a t-shirt for Thomas' gig at the Union Chapel on Feb 28th in Islington, London? As a reminder the title is THOMAS DOLBY and Friends: Circumnavigating the Flat Earth. Straightforward text and graphics in 2 colours will probably work best. You can try a graphic on front, text in back, you aren't limited to just the front. There's no prize other than the satisfaction of having designed it, and your signature somewhere in the design! You'll need to send submissions to me before Feb20th so Thomas can pick one in good time to print them up. Make sure they are high resolution, CMYK, please, for the best finished product that matches your ideas as closely as possible.

Happy designing!
