Colors disappear when saving to pdf
Colors disappear when saving to pdf
THAT THING ATE MY HEART OUT!!!!
Tenths of times when I was trying to save a copy of my .svg work to a .pdf file a VERY strange thing was happening.......
Some of my fill colors were appearing transparent .... that means no color AT ALL!!!! Trying back and forth from my svg to my pdf trying to fix things. Paint bucket over paint bucket.....NOTHING. But sometimes the colors were appearing solid without transparency.
That drove me crazy..........until I found the solution to the problem!
When I was using a stroke along with my fill (same color) things got screwed!!!
REMOVING the stroke was the solution to my problem!!!!
Hope that info helped someone out there with the same problem as mine
Cheers and have fun

Hello:
Why are you using the Paint Bucket for filling a shape? It is not better to just use the fill attribute of the shape?
I feel that there are a couple of things that you are doing wrong in your method.
Can you share a svg where the problem is presented?
I know you are solved your problem, but still is very strange.
Greetings

Re: Colors disappear when saving to pdf
Hi mate,
I will, as soon as I find a way to upload 5,7Megs somewhere here
What do you mean by saying fill attribute of the shape? Suppose I draw something using the bezier tool and then I want to fill it with a color. What's the correct way to do it if not with the paint bucket? Please show me your steps or point the page in the manual. Sometimes it doesn't appear to have a problem. I'm not yet quite sure what's the correct way but what I found out is that when I fill a shape with a color THAT color should not have a stroke.

Hi.
By removing the strokes on the paths "disappearing", it can all look "fine".
All of them were below 0,1 pixels, maybe that caused the problem.
Aside it could all be cleaned up, so that there won't be any gaps between the black outlines and the fills.

Hello,
Just recently, I've capable of looking your files.
First, I've exported both drawings, and I can't see any difference or disappearing of lines. I tried checking and unchecking the option "export page" option, andnothing. My system is win7 64 bit, using the most recent stable Inkscape (0.48.5). I noted also a low charge of your drawing on my pdf viewer (Foxit Reader). But it Seems that Lazur founded your problem too!
Second. When I see your drawings in Outline Display mode (or press ctrl+5 a couple of times), I noted that you have overlaped shapes in some parts of your drawing. Also, in your first drawing were unnecesary clips of every shape.
Third. You are using a raster image for the symbol in the tail of your plane. Maybe this is causing the big size of your file, because it's at 600 dpi.
But anyway, good artwork
Greetings

Re: Colors disappear when saving to pdf
Look at the blue dripping parts on the bottom, the blue stripes on the tail sign, and on the two red bumps on the tail.
If you open the pdf in chrome, those fills are missing.
Probably a bug in the rendering.

Re: Colors disappear when saving to pdf
I still don't see the difference, compared with the original SVG.
Maybe in the drippings at tehe bottom, I see an overlpaing of the shape and the stroke...
Oh well... If it works, don't fix it

Re: Colors disappear when saving to pdf
Here is how it looks here.
Re: Colors disappear when saving to pdf
But I still CAN'T conclude that:
- Puting a stroke less than 1 px in a shape, with the same color of stroke and fill, produces a error when exporting to PDF, in the meaning that the filling of the shape dissapears.
I tried with a simple drawing of two shapes with the same color in the fill and the stroke, and with an stroke of less that 0,1 pixels, and I don't see any problem!
I don't have many proofs to support what i think, but:
- I blame to overlaping duplicated shapes
- Tons of clipping paths
- The version on Inkscape.
- ??

Re: Colors disappear when saving to pdf
I could not reproduce the problem either from scratch.
Have tried all the stroke widths between 0,000 and 1,000 pixels, on clipped objects but all appeared fine.
No idea how, but on the original it does solve if the strokes on those objects are removed.
~500 clipping paths, and 100 filter effects.

Re: Colors disappear when saving to pdf
Neither could I.. I tried with simple shapes such as rectangles or circles or even closed paths. Nothing happened. I believe that it has to do with all that you said (though I have to study a little more on inkscape .... clipping paths ) plus that this artwork primarily had been made on another pc on a different version on a different linux distro...... Perhaps it's a minor compatibility issue. Who knows. Time and practice will tell.
Nevertheless, thank you all guys or your time and patience. I'll let you know on anything new.
Thanks again

Re: Colors disappear when saving to pdf
I do not see the issue in the PDFs here. I do get a warning on the bigger file about non-ANSI characters when opening the svg in textpad.
One possibly significant issue is unused defs: hundreds can be cleaned from the smaller file, and about 2000 can be cleaned from the bigger file. Cleaning the smaller file leaves a 1.3Mb file, cleaning the bigger file leaves a 1.4Mb file.

Re: Colors disappear when saving to pdf
The other thing I notice is multiple use of filled objects over the same shape/area, probably from repeated use of the bucket.
As noted, these are also unnecessarily clipped objects, which I usually see from artwork originating in Corel.
