I would like to suggest a feature that is not yet available in Inkscape, but is pretty useful in other program called SolidWorks. The feature is as follows:

If the selection rectangle is dragged from bottom-right to top-left, then only those elements are selected, which are completely in the selection rectangle. On the other hand, if the selection rectangle is dragged from top-left to bottom-right, then all those drawn elements are selected, which are fully and also partially in the selection rectangle (at least with one point + epsilon distance).

This feature would improve the process of selecting elements.

Please consider this comment by one of the Inkscape developers to a similar feature request raised earlier: Comment #4 (from the discussion of Bug #170589 "Rubberband enclose/intersect select modes dep. on direction")

The same request had been filed again later on (bug #451957), and has not received any further comments or reviews from Inkscape developers.

Are you aware of the 'touch select' mode implemented in Inkscape instead?

On the other hand: So much to _discoverable_ and following _the principle of
least surprise_.... as mentioned in the Comment #4 (link above).

I'm having problems with Touch Select in Gnome desktop: the ALT key is taken by the window manager - can we configure some other key, or is there some workaround?

One other option which works for me (on Gnome 2 at least) but which I couldn't see in that FAQ, is to hold down the Windows key as well. So you press the Windows key a fraction before ALT, and keep both held. This works in all cases that I've found where you can use ALT in Inkscape, and quickly becomes second nature.


(the only problem with this workaround for me is that my work keyboard doesn't have a Windows key, as I use a 1984 vintage buckling spring keyboard as it's so much better to type on than most modern keyboards)
