I am a bit confused here

I would like to download the pre-version of 0.91 for my Windows 8.1 - 64 bit.

But which one of all these?

Where do people find that google page? This is the 2nd or 3rd message I've seen, where people think that's where to get Inkscape. I'm not sure "back up files" is exactly what to call them. But it's probably better to get Inkscape from the official files on Sourceforge. Try starting on this page, to reduce all the clutter: https://inkscape.org/en/download/

They JUST released pre4, and I see they don't have Windows installers available yet, so I'd go with pre3. That leaves you with a choice of 32 or 64 bit. Both will work on a 64 bit Windows version. As far as I understand, using a 64-bit version of Inkscape on a 64-bit computer, will be a slight improvement in performance. But some of this technical stuff is a little over my head, so I might not have phrased that correctly.

I'm not sure what an MSI file is, so I shouldn't recommend using it, for the 64-bit version. But I can say the 7zip version should be fine, as long as you know how to extract a zipped file. If not, I can tell you.

But remember that these are still developmental or experimental. Some parts of it may not work well, or you may have more crashes than usual. Edit -- Actually, that might not be entirely accurate. Maybe pre-releases are a little more stable than developmental versions? I'm not sure

It's looking like (from observing messages on the mailing list) the devs are back on track, and building up to releasing 0.91, as it appeared was happening last autumn. At least, they said pre4 should be the last pre-release. Since the About screen contest has already happened, maybe it won't be so long.

Brynn - I found it on inkscape.org clicking the Windows installer...

Oh, I think I see the problem. Those are for compiling Inkscape, which is a way to install it....sort of manually....without an automatic installer. Did you click on the big Windows icon near to the top of the page? It's shaped like the Inkscape icon but has the Windows 8 icon in the middle.

Fortunately, I've been helping with the Inkscape website some, so I'll bring this to their attention, and maybe we can work out a less confusing arrangement.

Janne - in this case -click on the icon that looks like horizontal lines in the upper right corner of the Google Drive window.
This will list the files as text. Right now select "Inkscape-0.91pre4-1-win64.7z" - do not install but unzip - copy and rename as you learned in this post.

( brynn might be biased to NOT use the developers version - I am biased the other way!! Go for the "Latest and Greatest" -
over my years as an Inkscape user I can recall only one instance where the developers version would crash on me while the "stable" version would not.
That's the beauty of being able to "switch versions" in seconds. )

Yes, I do prefer to use a stable version. But I gave directions for the pre3 version, on the Download page.

If there is a Windows version of pre4, they just haven't updated the Download page yet. (pre4 was just announced Monday.) But whatever need Janne has for the development version, it will likely be found in pre3. Whatever the difference is between pre3 and pre4, I doubt is very much, as far as most Inkscape users can understand. Although I could be wrong.

I am simply just so very curious and a life long learner
