How to make nice and clean image for a custom art keycaps using Inkscape?

Postby apocryphum » Thu Aug 11, 2016 9:35 am

Hey guys!
I'm totally new to Inkscape but it looks like a really good app for my project :D

I'd like to make keycaps with a custom art on it for my keyset project but I struggle getting a clean result, and the only one that was half nice, was one with a transparent background...
But then I see people getting incredible result in their keyset ( like this Image ) and I'm wondering how they do and what I'm doing wrong...
It seems that i'm using the wrong technique ( i.e. when there is a backgroup I go on Paint(brush depends if I'm on Mac) and I color everything in a different color than the thing I want to keep and then I selection the whole thing and I 'crop'. Then I save and go on Inkscape and superpose the blank keycaps with the image and save ) and I think I should do the whole thing one Inkscape, but, unfortunately, I don't know how to use it...
These are the result I get with Paint/inkscape

and it looks really bad
I would need to put one these simple symbole like this Image on this for exemple

Could you explain me how to do it please?

I hope you understood my questions! Thanks :D

Hi,

I think you should learn about the difference between vector objects and of raster images first.
To learn more, read on here:
http://goinkscape.com/inkscape-vs-gimp- ... omparison/

And then take a look at the tutorials that come with Inkscape (Help -> Tutorials) to learn about basic usage, and visit a few other tutorials or one of the manuals linked from the 'Learn' section of the Inkscape website:
https://inkscape.org/en/learn/

The tools you will need most are probably the Bézier and the rectangle and circle tools, so focus on learning their usage. Also take a look at the Boolean operations, you will need those, too.

Here's a comprehensive introductory tutorial: http://vektorrascheln.de/posts/2015/Dec ... en-en.html (part one, follow link to part two).
Something doesn't work? - Keeping an eye on the status bar can save you a lot of time!

I guess you want to do better instead of just autotracing the existing:

Thanks for the render, definitely look more realistic than mine :D
But don't worry, it's just to show people how it would be like.
By the way, Inkscape had much more possibilities than I thought!

SInce you're asking how to do a very specific task here's a standard way to do it. Buttons are usually given their 3D look in vector by two simple gradients that run light to dark in opposite directions. There's a small blurred highlight to show the edge in this example; some people prefer the very graphic look of the sharp edge without it and some like this effect. Note that one gradient is radial and one is linear...

I'll try it!
But I can just copy/paste to make all the keys right?

Sure, copy and paste will work. Use the gradient or node tool to select the gradient nodes and change the colors. Once you have the colors right you might want to put the three objects that make up the key in one group. Also be careful that by default your button at the top of the canvas that says, "Move gradients in fill or stroke along with objects" is highlighted, or else when you drag the button the gradient will be left behind and the object will appear to become transparent, or all one color, etc.
Your mind is what you think it is.
