How can I change the background of the ui to a darker color?
How can I change the background of the ui to a darker color?
I searched high and low to no avail. I would love to find a way to change the background of the gui (the area around the actual image file) to a darker color in order to reduce eye strain. I know this might not be for everyone, but I very much prefer that. Any input is appreciated

Hi Ironorion,
it sounds like your talking about the padding color.
The padding color is usually determined by your operating systems themes.
The window theme controls the padding color, window decorators, etc.
If inkscape isnt using your theme's colors I'm afraid I dont know how to help you.
Hopefully someone who can help will see this and reply.
You can change the page background from the document properties dialog
but it doesn't sound like you are new to Inkscape, so I expect You already know that.

Re: How can I change the background of the ui to a darker co
I you are talking about the canvas, the blank area, you can effectively work on a darker surface by setting this to a color in the document properties dialog and then setting it to transparent. This allows PNG export to have a transparent background. However the objects that you draw will be influenced by this color if they have any transparency. It really is not worth it, and I know what you mean about eyestrain. One solution is to turn down the brightness of the screen when using inkscape. The color of the UI is changeable easily in Linux and with considerable difficulty in windows. Once again, if you are on windows and don't want to deal with GTK details and fiddling it's not really worth it, but that's the way to go about it.
Your mind is what you think it is.

From http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php ... g_Inkscape at the bottom of the page:
"Change the theme/skin:
In GTK, a theme is defined in a gtkrc file. On Windows, the Inkscape one is located in <Inkscape install directory>\etc\gtk-2.0\"
Using Word Pad or other rtf editor, open the gtkrc file that resides in the gtk2.0 folder. I find near the top there is an option for changing "fg-color" and "nbg-color" which control respectively the text and the background color in the UI window. Enter the hexadecimal # you desire, save the file, then close and re-open Inkscape to see what your new style looks like.
