I've been working slowly but surely on this.
Here's the latest:
As you can see, I have to work on the bottom of her nose some more and fix her mouth. Next comes her sweatshirt.

Nice to "see" you again!! How've you been?
I still use Gimp. I just like to try out different things.

I have been doing very good. I see that you are putting your skills to the test with vector graphics. I am assuming that your style of using what appear to be watercolors will be applied to inkscape? Well anyways happy inking :)

I wouldn't know how to get the Inkscape pic to look like water colors.
Anyway I'm finished with the project now and I will be posting it in the finished category.

With inkscape it is a little different, but you need something such as these. With the brushes you use in the GImp you would paint in black on a transparent layer and then save as a png. Then using the trace bitmap function of inkscape you would have your brush. There are many ways to achieve your desired affect.

Wow! That is so cool! I gotta try that out. Thanks for telling me that. :D
What folder do Inkscape's brushes go?

That's the funny thing about inkscape you do not have a brush folder. But instead you would create a document that would contain your brushes so to speak. So when you are working on image/document A you then would open your "brush document" and the copy and paste the brush your want to use into the image/document you are working on.

So, you're not really painting with it, you're just pasting it in places?
I just tried that out and I don't think that I can really do much with that, just create cool looking backgrounds.

your best bet for using those is the live effects, draw a line then use it in conjunction with the bend path effect to 'paint ' that line with the stroke.

Well when you have an object that you want to repeatedly use, you select it and keep it selected with the left mouse button and then use the space bar to keep making copies of what your are using. (Your tapping the space bar to create your copies instead of right-clicking/Ctrl+D and duplicating.)

The "bend path" effect is not working for me. I know I'm not doing something right and I can't quite understand the instructions.

Are you referring to this effect?

If it is you have to make sure to remove fill and only have a stroke and select you path to apply the effect to. Then use the option pattern source (paste from clipboard). If you cannot seem to get the option (pattern source), choose apply and the filter option will show up.

I'm using the Live path effect version of that in the development version rather than the python effect, but yeah, same thing in principle.

The live path effect is what I am referring to.

@gymnart
the instructions that I am referring to apply to using the development version of inkscape .46.

using the development version of inkscape .46.

Well that explains it then, I'm using 0.45 and I'm stuck with it so don't tell me to upgrade because I'm running SuSE 10.0 and I'm not about to upgrade my entire (nicely working) system (running the risk of introducing bugs, and problems, etc) just to upgrade one or 2 favorite apps.

I have been talking with one of the developers and he said,
As for inkscape and being made backwards compatible, unfortunately it doesn't tend to work well. The problem is that we do like to take advantage of new features made available in newer versions of libraries. However, please know that we also don't tend to have requirements for the most recent libs. We do try and take enterprise & lts distros and such into account and wait for a year or so of a library to have been out before bumping requirements.

So, that's why I said that I'm stuck with 0.45. I like it though and I'm having fun with it so no, I'm not discontent.

Anyway, I'm trying to follow these instructions: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Effects-GenerateFromPath.html#Effects-PatternAlongPath so I will just have to try it again and figure out what I'm doing wrong...

Ok here are some tutorials that may help you with using that effect with inkscape .45

http://mrtentacleguy.deviantart.com/art ... e-54969362

and

http://gamezealot.net/index.php/Inkscap ... Wings.html (from this thread

I am not totally sure about this but Wine should let you run a windows application if I am not mistaken. Using the development version of inkscape .46 I did not install but created a directory and a shortcut to the .exe file and ran it that way.

I finally got it to work. Thank you for your help!

The object that I had selected was in a group and once I ungrouped it, then the object to path command worked. I also found that I can take a freehand stroke and convert that to a path. I knew I had been doing something wrong the first time!

Well I can't benefit from that. See the post above regarding this.

I did try and look to see if Inkscape has been installed using Wine but there weren't any entries in the Wine database.
