You have to specify what aspect of the gradient you're looking for.

I guess you want "shadows"... Try this technique
Just add darker pieces and blur them. Effect is really good.

I apologize. I thought I had the word "metal" in my first post. I am looking to learn to create the metal gradient as seen in the wings of the image I linked to.
