[solved] Ad Astra #1

Postby Zardoz » Tue Jul 08, 2008 5:53 pm

This is what I'm doing with inkscape .46. It's a stickfigure webcoming based on the SFRPG "Traveller" and it was inspired by the oots D&D comic.

Image

Right now the images are awfully big, maybe 3x as big as they should be, I converted them to .gif format and they seem to show up clearly enough.

Advice is appreciated.

Very nice -- impressive!
I would just have one comment...following a couple of questions. The circle with the sawtooth border, where the space ship is coming out of (or into) is the "protective "jump bubble"" right? So what we see behind the ship, through the bubble, is the other side of space where the ship is coming from, right?

I think the gray to black gradient there is meant to look kind of like a sliding "door"? I wonder if some kind of markings on it would help clarify what it is? Or maybe the part of space where the ship is coming from, if it where significantly different (more or less lightness, stars?) than the space the ship is entering, it might bring more relative clarity to the door.

Anyway, that's just my take on it. Changes or not, it's a great piece of work -- good job!

I take it you're not into traveller, so I'll give you a quick explanation since the strip was written for traveller fhen.

Ships travel FTL in traveller via jump drive, jump drive allows a ship to essentially leave the universe as it's know, and enter jump space, an area of totally alien physics. Jump space cen't be seen by creatures from this universe, so I made it absolutely black.

The jump gate effect I used resembles the imperial symbol in traveller, I wondered if it might also resemble a jump effect, so used it.

Jump space will usually be solid black, while real space in my comic will have stars and stuff to differentiate it from jump space. I considered having stars and such visible in the gate to show real space on the other side, amybe I will later. I used the alternating shading on the gate here to make it look weird.

BTW, how do I adjust strike color easily in inkscape?

I've never even heard of it! But sometimes comments from those naive to a subject can be helpful. So that's why I replied ;)

I think I understand what you mean about making the "door" look weird. What about some transparency in the gradient of the "door"? (Sorry for calling it a door, but for lack of a better word, I'm not sure what else to call it.) EDIT -- Oooohh, or maybe use several gradients and skew their axises!?

Do you mean "stripe" -- the stripes on the "door"? I think you would want to change the color of the Gradient Stops. Otherwise, I don't know about "strikes" in Inkscape. I'm still very much a beginner!

Good luck :D

Do you mean "stripe"

I think he might mean "stroke".

You can change the colour easily in the Fill and Stroke dialog. You can also apply a swatch colour to a stroke by holding Shift when you click the swatch colour.

Thank you, MU, that was a big help. Hold the shift key to click change the stroke color.

Now I need urgent help with another issue I'll post about...
