How to Make a Flame Effect
How to Make a Flame Effect
I'd like to know how to make vector flames that could be part of a fire. I have a strange suspicion it has to do with paths bur would like a confirmation and a tutorial. Thanks.
Re: How to Make a Flame Effect
It depends what sort of look you're after (photorealistic, cartoon, ...), but here are a couple of relevant tutorials to give you some idea: How To Illustrate A Candle, Inkscape Tutorial - The Sun.
Re: How to Make a Flame Effect
Experiment with swirly orange, yellow & red shapes (flame shames) and the blur filter. You can create some very realistic fire if you get the hang of it.

So what don't you know how to do? What's your experiance with Inkscape so far?
Re: How to Make a Flame Effect
I want to know how to do flames in the style in the link, my experience with inkscape is average at best.

It may have seemed like a silly question, but it's just that there isn't really a trick to drawing those flames. You just draw an object using in the shape of flames.
I guess one trick is that if we were using Illustator you could give it a yellow fill with a orange stroke, but the stroke would need to be an inner stroke and you can't do that with Inkscape. So you would need to draw the orange part then duplicate it and use the inset feature to create the yellow part.
Re: How to Make a Flame Effect
All my flames end up looking like blobs, could someone post a more in-depth tutorial?
Re: How to Make a Flame Effect
I assume that means you don't know how to use the Bezier and Node tools? Refer to this chapter of the Inkscape Guide for how to work with paths - http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Paths.html
Re: How to Make a Flame Effect
I do know how to use them, but I don't know how to use them to make flames. Sorry if I come across as stupid.
Re: How to Make a Flame Effect
For me to help I think you'll need to provide me specifics of what you can't do. Those links didn't provide any information that you didn't already know about the tools? You know how to add nodes? Convert a smooth node into a cusp node? Delete nodes? Move nodes? Move the handles on a smooth node? I explain all these functions very quickly on this page http://www.microugly.com/inkscape-quick ... work-paths
If you are holding out for a step-by-step tutorial on how to draw a flame you won't get it from me But Heathenx might do a screencast on request.

Re: How to Make a Flame Effect
Micro's guide is the best place to start in terms of understanding how the pen tool works. Then the other way to learn to make a flame is to take that image that is in the link and trace the flames by hand so that you get a feel for the type of manipulation you will need to draw a flame. An example image to start of with is in this thread
But if you just wants some flames here is a multitude of them to try out. Just place your flame on one layer and then add a layer and work on tracing the flame underneath. Without knowing how to use the and with the various manipulations you are pretty much stuck.
