White Letters over Black Bar

Postby williamthrilliam » Tue Mar 08, 2011 6:48 am

I can't seem to get white letters in front of a black background to show up in anything other than inkskcape (Illustrator, Chrome, Firefox..). I will attach the sample file of my problem area, if someone could tell me how to get the letters to show up over the black half cross I would appreciate it. It should have one letter in each of the sides of the cross: IMS.

Avoid using 'Flowed Text' if there's no real need for it (e.g. a text object with a single letter, or any short text in a logo that doesn't spread across several lines). Inkscape's implementation of 'Flowed Text' is not supported by other SVG renderers.

You can convert flowed text to regular text using the menu command 'Text > Convert to Text'. After applying this command to all three letters (in your example you will have to re-adjust the fill color, too), the text/letters in the SVG file will be rendered correctly in web browsers and other SVG renderers.

Tip for new text objects: click once with the text tool on the canvas and start entering the text (instead of dragging a text frame first and then enter the text into the frame).

I'm really trying here, but I can't seem to get it to work. Anything else I need to do?

e.g. tell us what steps you tried and how it fails…, maybe attach the edited file.

Well, I did what you described exactly as above. I chose the "I' with the pointer, went to text - convert to text and then saved the file. Opened it up in chrome and it didn't work.

I also tried double clicking into the box, highlighting the letter, and then went to text- convert to text and that didn't work either. I've tried a few combinations of things and I'm still having trouble getting the text to show up.

I attached the file in my first post.

That's what I did and had double-checked in Firefox, Safari and Chromium: for me the edited file renders as exected in the broswers (note that as mentioned before I had to change the color of the converted text back to white).

I know that one (my earlier answer was based on editing it). I meant one you edited to convert the flowed text into regular text.

Does this attached version also fail to render in your Chrome? Then it's a bug in Chrome… ;) (It renders ok in Firefox 3.6, Safari 5, Opera 11 and Chromium 11.0 (beta) on Mac OS X 10.5.8)

Ah ha! Ok, so for that circle your convert to text trick works. Also, there seems to be a difference in the way linux/mac versions of inkscape handle text because when I opened back up your edited version the text was shifted downward my a noticeable amount. I have noted this before in going between my work and home computer (work is vista home is ubuntu).

So, I will now attach the full file and tell my why I can't get everything to convert to text. Please. I really am grateful, I have no previous experience in graphics editing before this and was asked to redo the company logo in vector format. So, I came here. Thank you.

The shift was already in the first SVG file you provided. I doubt that the used font 'Times New Roman' is rendered so differently in Inkscape on Linux and Max OS X that the baseline would have been moved by Inkscape without user interaction - but it could well have been the cause of the shift, I don't know.

The text is ok now, but you added a blend mode 'Screen' to its layer, causing the text objects to be invisible in web browsers.

To fix:
  1. open the 'Layers…' dialog and select the layer "IMS Cross"
  2. change its blend mode back to 'Normal'
  3. check the file in Chrome and other web broswers
