Some fonts are no longer producing gylphs

Postby prevodnik » Fri Dec 14, 2012 1:57 am

Hi,

I've been using Inkscape for two years now and today I encountered a strange problem: I opened an Inkscape SVG file I was editing just yesterday and all the text was gone. After looking into the XML source and some playing around with different fonts, it seems that some fonts just don't want to produce glyphs anymore - no glyphs at all. My existing texts are now rendered as a zero-height element. Changing the font to, say, Arial or many others works fine. But some fonts, despite being listed and not reported as "not found" don't work. I tried to use those problematic fonts in other programs (Scribus and Word) where they work normally. I also tried editing the XML to a non-existing font, which worked just like it should ("font not found"). The problematic fonts don't seem to have anything in common. Some of them are Adobe Caslon, Adobe Garamond, Arno, Trajan Pro, etc.

I use Inkscape 0.48.2 on 64-bit Windows 7. No new fonts installed recently, also no new programs. The only suspect thing is the Windows Update that was installed overnight, but it contained mostly security patches.

I searched the forum and bug tracker but couldn't find anything similar. Anyone having the same problem?

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

It does seem to be a problem with the recent Updates. See this topic. It's not particularly informative, but I do think it's reliable info :D

Hi

Other sites recommend uninstalling update KB-2753842 to fix the font problem affecting all Type-1 fonts.
(Type-1 fonts outlines are based on Bézier curves while Truetype fonts outlines are based on quadratics.)

I guess Microsoft engineers/programmers are working overtime to remedy this error as apparently all users who has enabled automatic updates are affected.
No news from Microsoft though!! (Are we surprised?)

To uninstall, in Win7 - Start - Control Panel - Programs and Features - View Installed Updates - Double Click on the line containing "KB-2753842"

I uninstalled that update and things are back to normal.

Thanks a lot.

Thank you very much, uninstalling the Windows update solved the problem for me, although the uninstallation process took nearly an hour... be patient!

I thought they fixed this issue? A friend said she ran the latest update and it brought back the font she couldn't previously see, geez, wish they'd leave the fonts alone, : )

Yes, psassy, you should install all the current Windows updates, to be sure that you have the patch for this problem. There should be no need to uninstall the update at this point.

And in fact, I thought I had locked all the topics that were started, relating to this issue. But I guess I missed this one. So since it's now solved easily by simply installing Windows updates, I''ll be locking this one too :D
