[solved] how to "unbreak" a path

Postby brynn » Fri May 30, 2008 10:20 pm

Hi Friends,
It seems like I read this in the Tavmjong guide, or somewhere, but I can't seem to find it now.

What if I have a node, and some time ago, I had selected it and clicked "Break path at selected nodes". But it was so long ago, that I can't use Undo, to undo it. So I'm wondering if there's a way to reverse the breaking of the path?

I know there's "Join selected endnodes" and "Join selected endnodes with a new segment" button. But I'm thinking of times when the path was only broken at one node. So there are no 2 endnodes, only one. I just want the path back to its unbroken state.

So is there any way to "unbreak" a path?
Thanks :D

That doesn't make sense. Just like you can't cut a string and end up with only one end, you can't break a line and end up with only one node :)

Are you sure the two nodes are not overlapped to look like one?

If you only have one node because you deleted the other half of the break, then perhaps your looking to continue the path from the end node?

Oooooh!
Ok, the object does have an extra node. And I haven't deleted any segments....or added any nodes. So does that mean when you use "Break path at selected nodes", another node is added exactly beneath the selected one(s), and the path is actually broken between the originally selected node and the new hidden one?

Oh, that makes SO much sense! So the way to "unbreak" the path, is to use "Join selected endnodes", right? Hhhhm...but then how do you select the new node that's hidden beneath the originally selected node? I tried "click" to select the original node and Alt + "click" to select the hidden one, but it doesn't get selected. Ok, let me make a new sample line and nodes. I've mucked around with this one, so much, it's hard to see what's happening.

Well, I still can't select it. If I've posited correctly, the new one is directly, exactly below the original, and even zooming to max zoom doesn't reveal it. So either there's a trick to selecting that hidden node, or I'm way off base

Drag a selection box around them.

Oh geez! :?
You know, I dragged the "rubberband" selection box around the nodes again and again and again. And it just would NOT highlight the nodes. I was fit to be tied (literally)! But later, I found that you 1st have to have the entire segment highlighted. Then dragging the selection box around the node DOES highlight them. So finally I get it  It's just the part where you have to sort of select twice, 1st the segment, then the nodes, before the "Join selected endnodes" button will work, that wasn't immediately obvious.

Thanks for that. An appropriate title can make the world of difference to someone trying to find answers.
