Export/Import Bitmap DPI Confusion

Postby kismert » Mon Mar 23, 2009 3:40 pm

I'm having problems exporting PNG files from Inkscape 0.46 to Xara Extreme Pro 3.2.4. The dpi setting seems to be at the root of this problem.

Let's use a 400px square as an example:
  • When I select Export Bitmap, the listed resulution is 90dpi. Setting it to the PC standard of 96dpi increases the size of the square to 427px, which I don't want, so I leave it alone, and export at 90
  • When I go to the Windows properties for the image, it shows the resolution as 89dpi!
  • When I open the image in Paint.NET (a bitmap editor), I get a 400px image, but shows a resolution of 89.99dpi.
  • But, when I import the image into Xara, I get a 427px square, which is exactly what Inkscape would have created if I had chosen 96dpi as the export resolution.
Confusion! However, Paint.NET lets me change the dpi setting. When I change it to 96dpi in that program, and save it, I get a picture that:
  • Saves at 400px
  • Imports into Xara at 400px
  • Imports into Inkscape at 400px -- not 427!
That last bit was surprising -- Inkscape does not scale scale a 96dpi image when importing. In fact, it seems to ignore the resolution altogether when importing -- 90, 96, 200dpi -- it doesn't seem to matter.

So, my questions are:
  • Is there a way to get Inkscape to export a bitmap at 100% size with a standard 96dpi resolution?
  • When exporting at 90dpi, why do Windows programs show the resolution at 89 or 89.99?
  • Why is the resolution ignored when a PNG is imported?

Thanks,
-Ken

Some of this was addressed in another topic.
