Hi!
I'm pretty "green" when it comes to vector image editing and I'm having trouble with an image of mine. I will *very much* appreciate any help offered figuring this out.
I have a block letter image with an outline. When I vectorized it, it turned out great, but I have a little problem with it. Basically there are 3 "layers" to each letter. There is a gold "background" which is the outline, on the bottom (actually, this is one object since it overlapped between all of the letters). There are the letters, then there are the "holes" in the letters, which are white objects.
What I want to do is turn the white "holes" into actual holes in the "background/outline" object, because the image has a transparent background, but when I apply it to canvases other than white, I have to change those "holes" OR convert them to transparent in a raster editor, which has quality issues.
I'm sure this is not too difficult to do, but I've put a couple hours into figuring it out and, embarassingly, have made no significant progress. A big issue is that I don't know the vocabulary of a vector editor (path vs object vs layer vs pattern, etc.)
Again, I would appreciate your help!

Re: Cut object shapes out of other shapes
Hi!
Can you upload your svg?
Then we could tell you straight instructions.

Hi.
I´m not 100% sure how your image looks like - but I guess you can combine background plus white "holes".
But I wonder how many colors you´re autotracing? Because normally you don´t need
Cheers

Re - RTM: I plan to! Learning Vector Graphic editing will be a benefit to me. I'm trying to learn as I go and this is an issue that I've spent time researching and "trying things" and finally decided to reach out to the community for assistance. Thanks for the link, and I hope to carve out some time to go through the guide soon.

Re: Cut object shapes out of other shapes
Copy the brown parts (Ctrl+C)
Select the -white and grey- hole paths, and combine them together (Ctrl+K),
reverse their direction, then add the brown background part to the selection and combine them together.
After that, select the -now- white path on top, and press Ctrl+Shift+V, then move it to bottom by pressing End.
Then, do the exact same things with the brown part above the letter "D", and with the blue paths:
combine letters together, copy the path, then reverse direction of the brown path on top,
then combine it with the lettering and paste in the style attributes,
and move the path on top by pressing Home.

Thank you, so much! I finally had time to spend on figuring this out, and your suggestion was spot on. I even understand why/how this works a little bit.
I wish I had more time to play with Vector graphics, but software is my life. Maybe one day I can combine the two into a hobby, when I have time for hobbies.
Thanks again for your walk-through of how to do this. I hope that others facing a similar issue stumble upon this post and are able to benefit from it as well.
Regards,
