Non responsive to mouse Windows 10
Non responsive to mouse Windows 10
I am running windows 10 in a Core i5 Lenovo laptop. For some reason it has stopped responding to my mouse. When I launch, it responds for a click or two, but then stops. If I click off it and click back on, it works for a single mouse click, then stops responding again.
I have upgraded my video drivers. That did nothing. Cannot find any conflicts.
Any idea what's going on?

Does it work with the touchpad or another external mouse?

Re: Non responsive to mouse Windows 10
I would suggest first make sure it's happening only with Inkscape, and it's not the mouse malfunctioning.
Is this happening in a blank new file? Or is it a large file? If it's a large file, let's say over 1 to 5 mb (depending on how much RAM you have), and your last click was asking Inkscape to make a lot of calculations, then the problem is that you don't have enough RAM to be able to handle that image. If you wait long enough, Inkscape might eventually finish doing whatever you asked. Then you will be able to click something else.
For example, if it's a very large file, and you did Select All and try to move the whole image. Or if you're zoomed in and you try to do pretty much anything. Here's an article/tutorial I wrote about how to prevent performance issues. So if this is your problem, this info will help. http://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/inde ... article=35
Inkscape doesn't rely very heavily on the graphics card. If I understand correctly, it's mostly filters that require the graphics driver. But for everything else, Inkscape uses RAM. I don't think Inkscape uses a video driver at all, although I could be wrong. But Inkscape is not a video editor or player.

Re: Non responsive to mouse Windows 10
No. It doesn't work with the trackpad, and it isn't the mouse. Inkscape seems to be the only program I use that has this problem. Once it happens, I can still access the menu's - they respond to the mouse. But the toolbars do not respond. And I cannot pan or zoom using the mouse or scroll wheel. If I hold the alt key and click an object, it selects it. Then I can move it with the arrow keys, but it will not respond to the mouse dragging it.
Really weird, huh?
My wife's lenovo has less memory than mine, and was upgraded to Win 10 at the same time. Inkscape runs flawlessly on it.
It would be great if someone has a suggestion of what to try next.

Also, it used to work great on this computer - even after the initial upgrade to Win 10. I truly can't figure it out.

Have you changed anything about your computer's display, such as set an unusual resolution, change the orientation, or use a screen magnifier or other accessibility device?

Re: Non responsive to mouse Windows 10
Have you changed anything about the 'Input Devices' in Inkscape's Edit -> Input devices, for using with a tablet? I do have a similar problem when I have my graphics tablet plugged in - menus work, canvas doesn't with the mouse then (but with the tablet). When I unplug it, all works well again - so it's 'either tablet or mouse - but never both' for me.

Oh yes Moini! Also problems like this can be caused if you happen to rest your mouse on top of the tablet. Assuming you have a tablet....I don't think you said?

Nothing unusual. I haven't messed with it at all.

I don't have a tablet, and the setting is for "Screen" and the pressure sensitive box is unchecked.

No tablet, so I don't think that's the problem.
Still get two mouse actions, then none.
Re: Non responsive to mouse Windows 10
MMmm, such a mystery.....
The only thing I can think of is to dig into the details for a clue. And try everything that might give us a clue.
Panning changed in version 0.91. I don't normally use panning, so I can't remember the details. But here's the info: https://inkscape.org/en/doc/keys091.html"uncited">
"click off it" means you deselect an object? And this is in a small file? Open a new blank file and try this:
The weird thing about that statement, is that using the Alt key with Selection tool is the technique for selecting an object that's below another object in z-order. Normally it's tricky to drag an object which is below another, with the mouse. To do it, it's Alt + click. Release the mouse button, but not the Alt key, then do a click-drag. And that changed in 0.91. Before, it was a little different.
Is that what you were trying to do (select an object that's below another)? Have you changed any key bindings (customized key shortcuts)?
Sorry if those questions seem random or illogical. I just don't have any idea where the problem might be...

Here's what I did:
1. Open new document.
2. Select the rectangle tool from the tool bar on the left.
3. Draw a rectangle, which is filled when it is drawn.
From there on, the toolbar is non responsive. If I double click it, the preferences come up. Otherwise, I can keep drawing rectangles, or hit escape twice, which highlights the select tool, but leaves the cursor in rectangle mode.
How weird is that?

Re: Non responsive to mouse Windows 10
A lot of bizzaro stuff can happen when the video drivers are wonky. I'd check with the display adapter mfr for a current driver. (Often, MS versions are not so great.)
Have a nice day.
I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1
The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

That's what I thought too. But I updated them from Lenovo. And my wife's Lenovo is an older model, similarly upgraded to Win 10, and Inkscape works perfectly on it.
Re: Non responsive to mouse Windows 10
I know I replied to your last message, mhpembe. I must have forgotten to Submit.
What's fascinating to me is that you can double-click, but not single click!
If I follow your steps:
Escape once deselects the rectangle, but leaves the Rectangle tool enabled (rectangle pointer). The 2nd escape switches to Selection tool.
After you draw the rectangle, do key shortcuts work? Like can you press S and get the Selection tool? Or P for Pencil tool? Z for Zoom?
And you're sure there's no unusual resolution, or screen orientation, or magnifier?
Have you tried deleting the preferences.xml file? I have no reason to believe that will work. But it can't hurt. (close Inkscape, delete prefs, open Inkscape)
Have you tried installing a 2nd version of Inkscape? You could try uninstall/reinstall. But installing a 2nd instance is just faster. Just don't put it in the same directory.
By the way, which package did you install? exe, msi, or 7z ? Maybe try a different package? 7z might be better, because it avoids the installation process (in case that's where the problem comes from).
If reinstalling or installing a 2nd version doesn't help, we should take this to the "big guns", by which I mean the developers, on the devel mailing list (https://inkscape.org/en/community/mailing-lists/). Or they'll see it on the User list as well.

Re: Non responsive to mouse Windows 10
I have identical problem on windows 8.1 right now. Inkscape is unusable, seems to "lock" focus to only one element. I noticed same thing if I open templates window, depending on which I click on first I can either scroll list, or click something on list. I also tried 0.48.5 version, same problem.
Re: Non responsive to mouse Windows 10
I confirm the problem exists with Inkscape 0.91, windows 10, Dell XPS 13, core i5 based. I haven't find the solution, yet.
Re: Non responsive to mouse Windows 10
It doesn't really help us to get messages like the last 2. If anyone is sincere about getting this fixed, they should first, follow all the suggestions made in this thread (yes, read the whole thing). And if still not fixed, please post on either the development or users mailing list. Please include as many details as possible, including operating system and Inkscape version.
I dont' think the op ever posted to the mailing list, so we have no idea if he ever solved the problem. Based on all the details he provided, I have a feeling he would have posted if he solved it.
But in any case, if you're interested in spending some time in troubleshooting, and posting to a mailing list, maybe we can get some developers on the case. I would volunteer to post for you, if you don't want to subscribe. However, before we do that, I need to know in detail, everything you've tried so far.
https://inkscape.org/en/community/mailing-lists/
PS - Please note that if you're working on a large image, and you've asked Inkscape to do some massive operation, the mouse will become inoperative (inside Inkscape) until Inkscape finishes the task. If the file is one mb, something like select all and drag could cause this to happen, on a machine with less than 4 gb RAM. (that's approximately, and for example)

Re: Non responsive to mouse Windows 10
well, it's Feb 2017 already, and I am having the very same problem as mhpembe described some 10 months ago.
(and excuse me for not cut&pasting his original descriptions, because mine would be the very exact same, as in "absolutely identical" to his).
With an up to date Inkscape and Win 10.

Re: Non responsive to mouse Windows 10
Something I didn't think of before, and since this is on a laptop, it probably isn't relevant. But we've seen this kind of behavior of not responding to the mouse when people are using 2 or more screens, or if they have changed the orientation (not Inkscape orientation , but their entire system is switched) from landscape to portrait.
As I posted last time, if you want to stick around long enough to provide all the info we need, please read through the entire thread, and try all the troubleshooting steps we've suggested. If you still haven't fixed it after you've checked all those things, then we can help you make a bug report.
In case you didn't read it all, I'll repeat that if you're working on a large file, and you've asked Inkscape to do something which is challenging for the amount of RAM on your system, the mouse will not work until Inkscape can finish what you last asked it to do. A large file is 1 mb or more in size. RAM 4 gb or less. Something challenging to the RAM might be Select All > Move. This usually would happen if you're zoomed in very far.
Here is some info on working with large files, to avoid these slowdowns, freezing, crashes, etc., in case that's the problem https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/ind ... article=35

Udate: the problem does not exist in version 0.91 (portable).
I uninstalled v 0.92 before that.
I uninstalled v 0.92 before that.
Re: Non responsive to mouse Windows 10
Update 2:
Everything seems back to normal !!
After uninstalling v0.92 I restarted Windows 10 and re-installed v0.92
in setup I chose the option to discard previous settings (or something similar).

Re: Non responsive to mouse Windows 10
Sorry, I just noticed brynn's response to my initial post.
No to large file, no multi screens, no recent orientation changes I am aware of, nothing.
Just opend 0.92, clicked , drew a rectangle - and from there on only menus responded to mouse / mousepad buttons. I think double clicks on toolbar were detected, but I am not so sure after so many experiments.
In view of the "solution" I mention in my previous post (uninstall, restart windows and fresh install) - I would suspect the problem is in some presentation layer "underneath" Inkscape app, but do note this problem occured only in Inkscape.
Another possible clue is that prior to initially installing Inkscape a few days ago, I installed / ran (as portable) 3 other graphic apps: GIMP, IconFX and Greenfish Icon Editor (no ofence..!). Maybe some of them were even open during Inkscape install? I don't remember.
Another obvious suspect is Visual Studio 2015 (Community) which I had just installed and was surely open when Installing v 0.92. Judging by the 45 minutes it took to install that merciless monster and it's need to restart Windows, and the fact that it is, after all, Microsoft, I wouldn't be surprised if it messed up something in the presentation level.
Here's my first 2 cents to this great application and thanks to everyone that made it happen in the years prior to my own enlightment..

Oh, that's good news then!
Thanks for sharing your experience. Maybe it will be helpful to others in the future.
Out of curiosity, what do you mean by "presentation layer" or "presentation level"?
