Dandelion

Postby jude » Sun Oct 19, 2008 2:53 am

Hi,
I'm working on this dandelion illustration and I think it's nearly finished. Maybe the stalk part needs some work but I'm not sure what.
Thoughts and opinions welcome :)

I think the tip of the stalk doesn't look quite "centered". Also, the stalk is maybe too 2dimensional - try adding shading to simulate shadow.

I like the top, very nicely done.

Thanks for your feedback. Here's a version taking your suggestions into account.
I'm still undecided about the stalk.

And here's another with more simple shading using a gradient.

Wow, that's impressive!

Re the stalk, how about a highlight? That said, I'm not sure right at the moment how to do that :P Also, I think the tip of the stalk needs to be pulled back just a little. Maybe?

Well, just some ideas. Mostly I think it's really neat how you used star shapes to represent each seed. It's very effective, so much so that I had to stare really hard to identify the stars. It looks so real! Plus the stalk color is right on.

Well done!

I think it's a really kewl design and clever idea.

I think I like the stalk colouring in the lower version. If I were to suggest a change, it would be to make the stalk thinner.

Seeing both versions, I think I like the 2nd one better - the one with the shadow looks more "realistic" but the more "flimsy" stalk in the 2nd version fits the overall lightness of the image better.

Hey that's really lovely, and a grand idea too. :D

Can you ramp up the random rotations of the outermost stars on the dandelion head? That might just add a little 'trueness' to the object's surface, as my eye is drawn there quite strongly for some reason. Also, how about a really pale blue/white gradient behind it to finish it off? :)

Thanks, I had noticed that myself but forgot about it. It's surprisingly difficult to get a circle of star shapes to look more random! I found adding in a few smaller stars has helped break up the symmetry.

Welcome to the forum! Image

I would suggest PMing jude, since he/she hasn't been active for almost 2 years.

No, that's not true at all! Everything technically belongs to the person who created it -- in the case of artwork, the artist. Putting a copyright mark on something is meant to give strength to any legal claims, should it become necessary. But the absence of a copyright mark does not change the fact that the artist owns the work they created. At least that's my understanding of copyright, as I've learned from personal research. Here are some links to info that I've found helpful regarding copyright.

http://www.copyright.gov/title17/
http://www.wipo.int/copyright/en/
http://www.publicknowledge.org/issues/copyright

If you really, really want to try and find the artist, you might try googling the username. Maybe they use it in other forums, where maybe they have an updated registration email? Also, a lot of artists use sites like DeviantArt, Flickr, etc. to display their work. You could search some of those as well. Even search here for other images jude might have posted -- if they use DA, etc., there may be a direct link from another image. Just a couple of thoughts.

Good luck :D

Edit -- PS - I did a little searching myself, and found that jude has a website, with a tutorial for the dandelion image: http://hereshowididit.com/something-ive ... orking-on/ You could draw your own!

Sorry for the delay in reply..

Thanks very much for the info. I think I'll try and draw it myself!
