When I click the edit button to edit graidents, the window for that doesn't pop up anywhere. Th emain Inkscape window does lose focus for a moment. It's not behind anything - I checked. I did have a secondary screen which is now gone, so I wonder if Inkscape saved off-screen coordinates; my windows desktop is of course set back to single screen (no extend/mirror or anything else).

Any ideas how I can find out and ideally get that thing back?

It might be upon the saved off-screen coordinates. Try with docked dialogs, check "Don`t save window geometry" (Properties/Windows) and it should appear.
