Out of Memory: command line options?

Postby davecoventry » Thu Dec 02, 2010 10:56 pm

Hi,

I've got a PDF which is about 1.5Meg and which I've converted to plain-svg to a file which is 57.2Meg.

I have upgraded my 32 bit Ubuntu Maverick system to 4 Gig of RAM but, although Inkscape will open the drawing, virtually any operation crashes it.

I need to add text to the PDF to provide comments for the draughtsman who did the original drawing.

Can anyone advise me of the best way to proceed?

Dave

If you wrote the comments elsewhere, do you think you might be able to paste them in? Or otherwise, could the comments be submitted separately with the PDF doc??

Hi Brynn,

Thanks for the response.

I need to place the comments on the PDF where the draughtsman needs to change his drawing so the location of the comments is important.

Are there no tweaks which can optimise memory utilisation for Inkscape?

You could try Vacuum Defs from the File menu. That will reduce the file size some, although I can't predict how much. Vacuum defs removes unused data from the file (such as gradients that you tried, but ultimately did not use, and other stuff that I don't understand). If you watch the status area when you click, it will tell you how many definitions were removed.

Also, if you are using layers, you could turn off the visibility of the layers that you don't need for the particular comment you're adding. (In the Layers dialog, it's the tiny eye icon.) I suppose you could close all the layers, and put all the comments on a new layer. Although I don't know if that would fit your needs.

I'm sorry, I wish I could be more help :( Maybe someone else has a better idea?
