[solved] Inner bevel, inner shadow, inner glow help

Postby timmy1729 » Sat May 17, 2008 1:51 am

I would like to get this effect:

But, I have no clue where to start in Inkscape. I use 0.46. Can someone tell me how to get this effect in Inkscape 0.46, please?
I have used the Heathenx Emboss tutorial(It was very helpful). I tried tweaking the settings to make it go inward, but I couldn't.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Your raster image doesn't really look like a beveled button to me. See if this puts you on the right track (or at least a different track).

Thanks for the help! Sorry, I'm very new to graphics and the programs associated with them so I probably have my terminology wrong. I will check it out in Inkscape when I get home. I do think that is what I'm looking for. Is there a simple way to make the edge at the top look a little more rounded, like in the original? It looks to me like there is a rounded edge around the whole thing. Maybe it's some kind of gradient and blur or something.

BTW, your tutorials are wonderful! Thank you very much for making them!

When you get a chance to open the bevel.svg file in Inkscape just select the back object and give it like a .1 or .2 blur to antialias. Select the inner object and blur even more than the 2% that I have on it to "roll" it even more. In other words just play around with it a little to alter the effect.

I don't think that you need any advice. Judging by your new image it looks like you captured your design intent. Great work! :)

My ultimate goal is this:

But now I am having trouble getting here:

I have the glow at the bottom just fine, but it is that transparent middle area that is giving me trouble. It uses some kind of mask in Photoshop. It's like replacing that area with transparency that was blurred. I have no clue how to do that in Inkscape. Any ideas?

Well, I figured that part out. I found Nicu's tutorial on reflecting text. He uses a mask in that and that worked perfectly for what I needed. I just made a white rectangle and a smaller black one inside and used a big blur on it and grouped them and put it over the other layers and did Group > Mask > Set and it worked. Just sharing that for anybody else like me who can't find much of this stuff so beginners like me can play with it.
