Inkscape keeps zoomed after closing and reopening a file

Postby AnalogueMan » Wed Dec 23, 2015 12:06 am

This is a somewhat different problem with respect to my last one with the window size problem:

Whatever I try, Inkscape refuses to display the full content of a drawing when I close and reopen a file.
It sticks displaying a zoomed in part of the total drawing after re-opening.
I certainly have forgotten something to check (or uncheck) in Edit > Preferences > Windows.
I checked and unchecked several items there using the 'trial and error' method without result.
Or do I have to look elsewhere to solve this?

Could be the size of your document.

I'd open the document, zoom out to see all objects, then click the zoom-to-document button,... If it reverts to the initial view, bob's your uncle.
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

As far as I know, that's the expected behavior. If you were zoomed in, at the time you last saved the file, before closing, then that's how it will be, the next time you open it.

At least that's how it's always happened for me. If I want it to open at 100% zoom, the next time I open, then I have to remember to set at 100% when I save for the last time, before closing.

Although.....hhmm, well actually I'm not sure if saving is the key. Maybe it just opens at the same zoom as when it was closed??

I don't think any of those options you mentioned in Inkscape Preferences has anything to do with the zoom factor. Although I could be wrong.

I can't do it right this minute. But later today I'll test whether it's the zoom when you last saved, or the zoom when the file is closed.

I got rid of this problem by doing the following,do not understand why this works but anyway...... :) :
1. I selected everything within the drawing
2. Object > Group
3. Save and Quit
4. Opened the file anew and now the whole drawing is displayed
5. Object > Ungroup
6. Save and Quit
7. Opened the file anew and now the whole drawing is displayed

Now I got rid of the problem. Feeling a bit unsatisfied with it but if this is a workaround, then it will be so.

Quick solution (as suggested by tylerdurden):

Just press the 4 on your numpad after opening the document to zoom to the full drawing.
(for other preset zooms, see https://inkscape.org/en/doc/keys091.html#d0e830)
Something doesn't work? - Keeping an eye on the status bar can save you a lot of time!

I did that (what tylerdurden suggested) and IT DID NOT WORK!
Then his comment: "If it reverts to the initial view, bob's your uncle." :?:
Sorry but this (bob's your uncle) idiomatical expression falls beyond my knowledge of the English language

My rudimentary tests indicate that the view reverts to the zoom level of the last save, per document.

i.e. Document 'A' saved at 400% zoom will open at 400%, even if document 'B' is opened and saved at 200% before document 'A' is re-opened.
Have a nice day.

Not overhere. I zoomed out to fit window (hitting '5') then saved it. After reopening, same situation: zoomed to the same part again
was displayed. So after executing my "procedure 1 to 7", everything was O.K. Normal situation restored.
For your information: I am running under PCLinuxOS-KDE 64bit. And Inkscape version 0.91

I would replicate the test and ensure the file is getting re-written after the zoom change... Files won't re-write unless a change is made to the document or its contents. (the status bar will indicate if there are no changes to save)

It is easy enough to select an object and use the arrow keys to move the object up and back to its original position and then a save operation will re-write the file including the zoom values.

Or just toggle the layer visibility twice.

Yes! For some reason, a change in zoom is not saved, if that's the only change you made since the previous save. And that's exactly what I do, if I want the zoom level to be saved before I close. First, set the zoom as I want it. Then I just select a node or object, press an arrow, then press the opposite key to put it back. Save. Close. And when I open it again, it has the last zoom level I set.

However, I rarely find a need for a file to open at any particular zoom level. Usually I only do this when it's a large file, and zooming threatens a crash. So I want to make sure when it opens, it's at 100% or even 50%.

Other than that, keeping the same zoom allows me to resume working after a "break" where I left off.
