Creating a path around a slightly-rotated image

Postby gkholman » Thu Sep 06, 2018 5:26 am

Hi! I've tried hard not to take time from volunteers on this list, but I'm stuck after a lot of effort.

I've imported an image bitmap and placed it on the canvas with a bit of a rotation ... say 20 degrees.

The bounding box is now the rectangle that encompasses the four rotated corners, so it is bigger than the image and the image touches the four edges instead of the four corners. The image is placed in its target location and I'm trying not to move it, but I want to work with it as it is where it is.

At this point I would like to draw a rectangle at the same dimensions and corners of the rotated image inside of the bounding box. Then I can go ahead a do whatever clipping I want to do. First I draw the rectangle and then convert it to a path in order to get the four corners as handles to manipulate independently to the four corners of the rotated image.

But getting that new rectangle precisely at the four corners of the rotated image appears to be a manual effort only. While I cannot figure out how to "snap to the bounding box" to work, that will get me close, but not to the very corner ... I might as well do it manually.

My gut feel is that there are no automated ways of finding the corner of the image once it is moved off of the corner of the bounding box ... but then I figured if anyone would know they might be in this forum.

Thank you for any guidance! . . . . . . . . Ken

Don't convert it to a path, but just use the rectangle as a rectangle. Then you can use the rectangle tool to adjust the length of the sides. Use snapping.

Or, probably faster: Switch to Bézier tool, activate snapping to object corners and cusp nodes (I think, you may need to try around a bit) and just draw from one corner to the next.

Perfect! Thank you, so very kindly!

The Bezier tool with "snap cusp nodes including rectangle corners" turned on worked perfectly the first time I tried it.

It is the first time I've effortlessly cropped a rotated image.

I'm very impressed. Thank you, again.

(forgive me if this is a duplicate; I thought I already replied to this thread but I don't see my reply)

Thank you, very kindly, for this guidance. Using the Bezier tool with "snap to cusp incl. rectangle corners" worked perfectly the first time I tried it! I got exactly the rectangle I needed and proceeded to make the cleanest crops I've ever done.

I very much appreciate the prompt and expert reply! . . . . Ken
