GIMP 2.6 released

Postby microUgly » Mon Oct 06, 2008 1:35 pm

GIMP 2.6 has been released, people - http://www.gimp.org/downloads/

You can read a review of it at Ars Technica - GIMP 2.6 released, one step closer to taking on Photoshop. Although some things they've said in the review has confused me:

The floating tool windows have also been adjusted so that they are always displayed over the document window and cannot be obscured. To reduce clutter and make the windows easier to manage, the floating windows will no longer be listed in the taskbar.

I don't see this at all on the Windows version. With the exception that the file menu is now on the document window, each floating window still appears in the taskbar and can be obscured. I don't see an option for it either.

I had the same issue then after some googling I found this.

Basically for some reason the windows version works differently then the linux one.

If you want to you can download a single dll and replace the current one in your bin file (I just added a .bk to the original and dropped the new one in the same directory)
now start up gimp and it will then work like the released linux one. (aka tools always above the image you are working on)

Can you anchor the menus like in Inkscape 0.46 and Photoshop?

It doesn't look like it, but I don't mind it this way.

I'm not sure I'm a fan of Inkscapes docked palettes. I'm always juggling them around and resizing them because there's not enough vertical space. On my home PC where I have more than one monitor I disabled the feature and put the palettes on another screen. But I don't like that floating palettes creates excess taskbar items. I would be happy if Inkscape copies GIMPs recent changes.

Thanks for the alert, Microugly. I hadn't checked the GIMP site for a week or so and lo and behold there's a new version waiting to be grabbed.
Downloaded this yesterday but not had cause to tinker with it much at all, yet.

They're really coming along with The GIMP now; the integration of GEGL, when it's complete and fully operational by default, is going to be fantastic. I'm also looking forward to the development of non-destructive layer editing - one of the few things Photoshop does that I miss when using GIMP.

I'm particularly interested to see what's changed with text layer editing. Might go and have a peek shortly, in fact.

Thank-you! I use Gimp 2.6 on Windows as well as Linux and this little hack is wonderful. Sometimes it's the little things. ;)

How come every time someone interviews a Gimp developers they say, "We are not trying to compete with Photoshop", or "We like gimp just the way it is". And stuff like that?

Probably because they need to keep their goals realistic. You really don't want to compare those two products because GIMP may only win an award for price. That's not to say GIMP isn't good. I can appreciate it satisfies many and I've seen how great some people are with it. But a professional Photoshop user would find GIMP crippling.

GIMP 2.6.1 (bugfix release now out) -Re: GIMP 2.6 released

Gimp 2.6.1 Release now has the tools in-front of the image window by default, no dll replacement is now needed :)
