Hi,
I've looked for similar threads, but the one matching the closest (http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=11438) doesn't quite solve the problem for me.
Essentially, I want to snap a guide through a selected node so that I could then align other nodes to the original one. There is a command, "Object to Guides", which looks like it has similar process in mind, but it doesn't work on individual node level: the whole of the object is converted. Also, I could find a way to turn it off back to the original object.
Any ideas?
Snap guides to individual selected nodes
Re: Snap guides to individual selected nodes
No, once you convert an object to a guide, it can't be changed back. But there probably is a way to do what you want. It's just that I don't understand exactly what you want to do. In what way do you want to align the other nodes to the first? I'm assuming that you don't want to align them all along a guide line, since that's apparently the solution to the other topic. But we need to understand how you want them aligned.
Do you want several nodes to snap to the same point? Nodes actually do snap to each other, if you have the snap options set right.

Re: Snap guides to individual selected nodes
The solution from that thread suggests dropping a horizontal (or vertical) guide through the reference node, but I can't make it snap to the exact centre of the node. I can manually reposition it, but that's always going to be an approximation and not the precise location.

Guides and nodes do snap to each other, but you have to enable those particular snaps. Is your snap toolbar visible? Do you have snapping enabled (1)? Do you have snapping to nodes, paths and handles enabled (2)? Do you have snapping to cusp nodes and smooth nodes enabled (3&4)? Do you have snapping to guides enabled (5)? All must be 'on' for a guide to snap to any node.
Oops! In the image above snapping to guides is actually shown unselected while page and grid are selected, but you know what I mean!
Your mind is what you think it is.
Re: Snap guides to individual selected nodes
druban, thanks for pointing to something that is now very obvious. Being new to Inkscape, I thought the only snapping options were in Document Settings: Snap to objects, Snap to grids and Snap to guides. After I enabled all five buttons, everything worked perfectly
Re: Snap guides to individual selected nodes
Note that there may be times after you snap a node to something (or something to a node) that it looks off center -- to the guides, grid or rulers. Zooming can affect this quite a lot. But rest assured that you are still snapped to the center, even though the display looks off center. The reason that things might not look perfectly aligned sometimes, has been explained to me. But I can't remember the explanation at the moment. (I actually have a bit of a fever at the moment.) Anyway, not to worry, if you happen to notice some discrepancies
