Vectorizing color image...

Postby rjensen » Sun Mar 14, 2010 2:47 pm

All

I have been asked to vectorize a color image (fireworks, no less). I used Inkscape's 'Multiple scans' functionality and got a decent reproduction, but the image appears as several layers, not as a single vectorized image. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions on how to vectorize the image. I don't need the black, just the color to make a heat-press logo for a shirt. High resolution version (pcx format).

Thanks,
Roy Jensen

when you export to bitmap, as you almost certainly will for printing purposes, the layers will be combined into the final, flat image.

Actually, the entire reason I am vectorizing the image is because the printing company can't handle the bitmap. They need a vectorized image. <sigh>

(All: I just realized this should have been posted in the 'work in progress' section. My apologies.)

the printing company can handle .svg which is not a print standard format but not a bitmap image? Were they having issues with the bitmap format or with the size of the file? Also, when you do the bitmap trace, is your result really in different layers or is it simply different paths stacked on top of each other? If your printer can handle svg files then you should be good to go unless you really have different layers. The reason is that layers are not really supported by svg and are an oddity of "Inkscape svg". Someone with more technical knowledge may be able to help you better if I'm completely missing the issue.

All I can think of is one by one, moving the content of each layer onto one layer.

Save it as a PDF. Your printers "should" be able to work with a PDF version.
