[solved] Text in a sprial (or other shape) ???

Postby ScraPerfect » Sat Jul 12, 2008 2:45 am

Is there a way to type and make the letter follow a shape? (That is without typing each letter and dragging it onto a shape).

I know you can do this in Photoshop (but I have Photoshop Elements and you can't do it) and it uses something called a path and I see there are paths in Inkscape...

Thought I'd say...I have a MAC (though it shouldn't be much different..)

THANKS!

You can put text on a path, such as a spiral, from the Text menu>Put on path.

Thanks. New One now...
I want to wrap text around a shape (like a star. I can do it with text to path..and I can even remove the object after. But then I want to cut with SCAL which needs svg format. But when I import it into SCAl, nothing is there but the line. No text. I'm told it's n/c SCAl needs objects not text...so what does this mean or how can I convert the text into an object?

Thanks!

Select the text and select Object to Path from under the Path menu. That'll cure what ails ya.

Didn't work.... And I even tried when I shift click both the text and the star (object). (I had thought you'd do it the same way as with text to path but with object but it doesn't work. Nothing happens.

I have a star (with a dashed box around it) and a line of text(with a dashed box around it)...

In that case, select both text and star and convert to path. Add a stroke the the star and remove the object fill. Select text and then star and go to Effects>Generate from Path>Pattern along Path. Take the defaults. ;)

I know how to select both but I don't see the choice "convert to path". (I see convert to text...) so I can't see if I can do the rest.... Thanks for working with me!

I didn't have time to make a proper screencast so I hope this helps. The video is rough.

I am sorry but I think I'm jinxed! You have gone above and beyond! I have a MAC and had to download the latest Quicktime. I restarted my computer but nothing happens with your link. (Sometimes I get a window and the screen is black and the arrow is moving at the bottom like I'm watching but it's all black. Othertimes I can't even get a window to open... Any other ideas would be appreciated!!

PS When I went to http://screencasters.heathenx.org/wp-co ... /ep014.avi, I get a white screen and the audio sounds like a helicopter.

But when I went here, I could see their screencast just fine...http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/

 Mac users...they are always tripping me up. :)

You could always grab VLC and watch the video but I made a special one just for you. See if you can watch this one. It's quicktime compatible. ;)

Round Two

PS. Btw, if you are having trouble watching ep014 from the Screencasters then I recommend that you click on the monitor image and watch the streaming flash file instead.

WOW WOW WOW!!! I feel so special and I really appreciate it.

So, how does one know when words are text or when it's an object? (I want to cut it with Sure Cuts a Lot which rewires .svg and I guess objects.) I mean, it there a tag or whatever or is it just you know if you've done what you say, then you know it's an object?

When you select the object (text) pay attention the Inkscape status bar at the bottom. It will tell you if what you have selected is actual text or an object. You can also double-click the object. If you get into text mode then you have text if you see a gazillion nodes then you have a path.
