Hi Guys,
I am by training a Fine Artist and have always had an interest in Digital Art. I have been working with Blender for about three years now, however I want to expand on this and learn how to create vector illustrations. I want my art to bring in a little money, however I am unsure if Inkscape is suitable for commercial applications. For example I have a Deviant Art profile where you can create prints from your work. Would this be possible with an Inkscape illustration, would the image print OK? I am also considering stock image websites and anywhere else that may be a suitable place to sell vector based art.
Before I get ahead of myself I am trying to decide if Inkscape is suitable for what I intend. Any help you could offer would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Welcome 01 Boxer!
In our Finished Work forum, are several photorealistic images, created entirely in Inkscape. Very impressive! I'm sorry I can't remember which ones they are, but they are mostly portraits, so maybe a search for "portrait" would work???
I don't think Inkscape images print any differently than raster formats. Although I am not familiar with DeviantArt's print feature. I mean I've seen the buttons, when looking at images there. But somehow I thought it was like buying a print, rather than printing it on your printer.
Inkscape can do almost everything that any raster graphics program can do. Allthough you must note, if you're familiar with using raster graphics, that Inkscape does things very differently. And if you are making the switch, you will have to learn a new workflow.
Also, since Inkscape is so free and all, you could download a copy, and play around with it, and judge for yourself. It's not quite the same commitment, that Adobe and PhotoShop are! Personally, I MUCH prefer the Inkscape interface, above the several (free) raster programs I tried.
But I'm not a professional, not even an artist, just a hobbyist. Maybe some professionals will reply before too long?

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replys, lnks and welcome
@Ivan, those are amazing images. However I noticed that they weren't set as prints. I bought The Book of Inkscape and on page 14 the author writes "...of the missing features, perhaps the most important is the lack of native CMYK support, which makes it hardly usable for creating files for print".
With this in mind I am unsure if an image created in Inkscape would be suitable for creating Art Prints?
@bryn, There is great work on the forum. Yep, you are right, the The DA print feature allows artists to create Art Prints from their work. this includes Photographic, Canvas and high quality Paper Prints. Here is some info on what they offer: http://help.deviantart.com/281/
A lot of my more traditional work is quite graphic and would look good vectorised so the challenge of learning something new wouldn't put me off. Normally I would just throw myself in and have a go. However after spending long hours and many years trying to get somewhere with my Art I am now being more focused with what I learn. I really hope that Inkscape is suitable for Art Prints as it is something I really want to learn.

A word of warning when printing from Inkscape. Some commercial printers don't usually work pngs so you'll probably have to convert it to a tiff or jpeg. Otherwise I've found Inkscape pretty good to use!
