Well, you certainly don't beat around the bush. I do use Ubuntu, and Ubuntu can in fact use an SVG image for a desktop image. So, if you set your image size to your desktop proportions (in my case, 1680 x 1050) you can essentially design your own desktop image with gradients, the whole works.

2ND EDIT: Very nice! Would you be able to quickly re-size that for 1680x1050?

3RD EDIT: I just logged in to Windows XP with FireFox 11.0. It's displaying your SVG instead of showing "SVG Image" as my Mac did. So, I ditched my copy of your text.
