How to run stable and dev versions of Inkscape?

Postby BetaTestingPro » Sat Jun 29, 2013 12:35 am

Hi all,

I'm just curious if there is a way to run Inkscape stable version and Development version
side by side in Ubuntu 12.04. I remember doing this in Ubuntu 10.04 was really simple
and if I remember correctly, it just involved adding both PPA's. However, it seems that in
Ubuntu 12.04 when I try to install the Dev version (inkscape-trunk), it wants to uninstall
the stable version. Surely there is a way to run both stable and dev versions, yes?

I like to use both so I can try out the new features in the Dev version, but I'm well aware
of how unstable that can sometimes be so I'd also like to keep the Stable version installed
for production work. Does anyone know how to do this?

Thanks in Advance!

Hello,
My appologies for this late answer. I don't have the solution, and was hoping that someone with more experience could help you.

I don't know if still exists in Ubuntu: Install Synaptic, then search for the "force" installation option. I know it's very vague, and maybe dangerous for your system. Other hack is doing by console with apt-get, in that case, the only thing that i can suggest is:
man apt-get

Good luck
If you have problems:
1.- Post a sample (or samples) of your file please.
2.- Please check here:

3.- If you manage to solve your problem, please post here your solution.

Hi hulf2012,

Thanks for your suggestion. Though I'm not sure it's what I'm after. You see, I can install it from Synaptic w/o forcing it as is. However, it warns me that it will uninstall the currently installed version if I do so. I will look into doing it from the Terminal and see if that allows me to install the Dev version w/o uninstalling the Stable version but was hoping for a way to simply add a ppa for the dev and one for the stable as was done in Ubuntu 10.04. If push comes to shove, I can probably just build the dev version to have both versions working.

Anyway, I'll update here if/when I get it figured out.
