[solved] Help with screen blend...
Hi all! I'm pretty new to Inkscape and have been working through a few random tutorials with a good amount of success. I've since become brave and decided to do some Adobe Illustrator tutorials using Inkscape. I can get most of the way through this tutorial, but get stuck at the very end when they ask me to do a screen blend. I've found screen blend in the new Filter Effects dialog...but despite heathenx's great screencast and Tav's guide, I'm baffled as to how I can make it work. I can only manage to make the item I want to blend turn completely black. Please instruct me, oh wise ones...
Re: Help with screen blend...
For clarification, your trying to change the blend of the shine that consists of a white to black gradient? I don't know why it would be black, but you need to make sure that the shine object is in its own layer, separate to all other objects. Then set the blend mode for layer with the shine to screen. Voila!
An easier way, however, is to not use blend at all. Instead of using a white to black gradient, use a white to transparent gradient. This is something Inkscape can do that Illustrator cannot.

Re: Help with screen blend...
Thanks microUgly...it seems that I've completely neglected to come across layer features in my learning thus far. I was trying to use the Filter Effects screen blend when it was the layer screen blend that caused the needed effect. And you're right...using a gradient white to transparent white created the exact same effect without the need to mess with layers. It's nice to know more than one than one way to do it though. Thanks for your help!
