Hello,
I've started using inkscape recently and I don't know much yet about settings.
Last time I installed inkscape on a machine and I saw that the drop down menus have icons next to some of the options. For instance: the option "union" in the drop down menu "path"
Yesterday, I got a new computer and installed the latest version of ubuntu (10.04 LTS). After that I installed inkscape(0.47). Inkscape runs, but the drop down menu icons are missing.
I'd like to have these icons in this new inkscape installation as well. Is there any way to do this?
Thanks!

Re: drop down menu pictograms missing
There was a decision for Ubuntu Lucid to display no menu icons at all - AFAIK they even removed the configuration option to reenable it («But in Lucid they have also removed the Interface tab in Appearance Preferences.»)neonic wrote:Yesterday, I got a new computer and installed the latest version of ubuntu (10.04 LTS). Maybe this topic in the ubuntu forum helps: [SOLVED] How to enable icons in System menu in Ubuntu 10.04? - there certainly are more to be found by googling for menu icons in ubuntu lucid.
AFAIU nothing can be done about it on Inkscape's side.
Re: drop down menu pictograms missing
Just in case there's more than 'missing menu icons' but alsoneonic wrote:After that I installed inkscape(0.47). Inkscape runs, but the drop down menu icons are missing.
- lots of broken icons,
- broken check box widgets and
- hotkeys for menu actions jammed over to the left with the descriptions
Re: drop down menu pictograms missing
it was the first: menu-icons were disabled.
I've solved the problem with these instructutions:

Re: drop down menu pictograms missing
Since the instructions are basically about GNOME and not about Ubuntu specifically, I found this helpful! Thanks for posting it. I am a Fedora user and find that Fedora is a perfect environment for Inkscape and other graphics programs.
I use Fedora 12 and Fedora 13 on different machines and it performs well on both. But just to assist in making this help more searchable (so it can help other users as well) I'll just copy and past the instructions here in case the URL gets broken or something:
Re-Enable Button Icons In Gnome 2.28 and Gnome 2.30
* Open up gconf-editor (either through a terminal, menu shortcut or Alt+F2)
* Navigate to: desktop > gnome > interface and check "buttons have icons"
* To enable Menu icons check 'Menus_have_icons'.
This is quite necessary for Inkscape users like me who cannot quite remember what each function does. The path functions are especially confusing for me but make more sense with the icons.
