Hi I downloaded Inkscape 0.91 a while ago and now all the stroke gets squashed when I resize objects. This makes inkscape unusable as a drawing tool, and I cant seem to find the option that makes this "feature" go away. How do I fix this?
Resize tool squashes stroke
Re: Resize tool squashes stroke
There's the button "when scaling objects, scale the strokes"
(not my image BTW, googled it)
but whether it's on or off, I don't get the same effect as you.
In my case, all stroke widths are scaled equally - or not scaled at all.
In your case, when scaling horizontally, the vertical stroke widths are scaled but not the horizontal ones...
Maybe a setting somewhere? Hope someone else can help, and I'm curious also...

So, filip, you are capable of:
"I just came up with a technique that produces a super fast gaussian blur effect..." (2013)
but now, your current opinion is:
"inkscape unusable as a drawing tool" (2015)
?!

Re: Resize tool squashes stroke
I've seen that bug mentioned somewhere... And I've also experienced it myself. It's a known one, at least.
(usually, it doesn't happen for me - or rather, it jumps back after resizing - , so there must be a way to not have it... )
suv might have more info for us.

Unless you need it preserved transforms for other compelling reasons, change back to 'optimized' transforms (you likely changed the prefs [*] for Transforms from 'Optimized' (default) to 'Preserved' at some point).

Perfect!!! Thank you, this was indeed the case.
I changed this setting some time ago to experiment with svg-animations using Snap.js. When the transforms are preserved its easy to do transitions between shapes with only a couple of lines of code:

I actually use inkscape every day in my work as an interaction designer. I have Illustrator installed as well but I never use it. I have become dependant upon it so when the stroke suddenly scales wrong I get really upset

Re: Resize tool squashes stroke
Hey guys,
I have the same problem, but can't get it fixed. I'm not a designer, but a scientist and I'm using Inkscape to format graphs, bar plots etc.
When vertically scaling an object, I get the same effect as filip, regardless of which scaling option is selected:
Regular plot
Scaled (scaling option 1 not selected)
Scaled (scaling option 1 selected)
When scaling option 1 is deselected the result is better, but frankly still not good at all. Also the text is being scaled; I'd much rather have it simply moved along with the other objects in the group, but still look like regular text.
Can anyone help me with these issues?
Thanks!

Re: Resize tool squashes stroke
Hey,
just figured it out myself: When I ungroup everything again, the horizontal strokes have a proper width again.
I'd still like to know though whether there's a workaround to not scale the text, but merely move it along with the rest of the group
Many thanks!

Quoting ~suv:
(this works without ungrouping everything after scaling the group)
and no, it's either scaling the whole group or scaling a selected part of the group, and then moving the rest to the correct position. You can't mix scaling and moving for different objects in a group.
