Does Inkscape have a Gradients Library?

Postby pixabella » Thu Oct 18, 2007 12:04 am

Hi,

I am new to Inkscape and I have a question about gradients. Is it possible to save a gradient so I can reuse it in another document? :?

We dont have a stock gradient library type thing yet, so the best you can do at teh minute is to keep a file that you use as a library and just copy and paste gradients you want to keep into that, then copy/paste style back out of it in your new docs.

@Simarilius, Thanks for the tip that's a great option.

@roros, I followed the link and I downloaded the gradients. I copied the files into the main gradients folder of Inkscape. I went back into Inkscape and drew a rectangle and try to apply the new gradients, they were unavailable. Should they be in another folder or does the Inkscape gradient tool not recognize these files?

I am using OSX.

The easiest way to import a "ggr" (gimp) gradient in Inkscape is by
dragging&dropping it from Explorer into Inkscape canvas (page); the gradient is then
immediately available in the fill dialog and can be assigned to objects (or edited),
etc.

To clarify, that folder doesn't yet perform the function you expect. It's an intended feature.

@rosros, Thank you so much I was able to import the .ggr file, however in Mac OS X drag and drop from finder doesn't work. I had to use File > open and I had to select all images otherwise Inkscape would not recognise the file.

Does anyone know when the gradients folder within Inkscape will function as a library?

The developers don't like to talk about dates much. Some of the planned features have been floating around for a very long time. I would pretend that it will never come to light, then act surprised when it does :)

I might move this up my todo list actually, since I got the stock patterns working, and there seems to be a lot of interest in it. No promises on dates tho, as it has to fit round a very busy real life.
Out of interest, would people prefer this or jpeg output?

Kewl. I didn't know this was on "your" Todo list.

Myself, I don't miss JPG output at all. I like my images to look as crisp as they can. Sometimes I look to JPG when filesize is getting a little large but that's rare.

If for some reason one cannot use drag and drop, the gradient should be be "imported":
File->Import [or Ctrl-I] then select "Gimp Gradient (*.ggr)" in the drop-down list on the right of the dialog.
I have prepared a short flash tutorial for you, you can download it from
http://www.mediafire.com/?9gmwmbzdxye
Unzip the two files in the same directory, then click on ggrimport.htm (or open it with your browser).

BTW, what do you think of this method of making tutorials? I have used "Wink".

been there a long time in a "I hope someone else gets round to it first" kinda way. I put in the code to support retrieving stock stuff from the folders ages ago, just only ever hoooked up the ui for markers. I finally got round to doing some basic ui for the patterns the other week, so gradients are the only one left needing some love. Had been hoping that the pallettes would extend to allow gradients and so I could just patch it into there, but it doesnt seem to be happening anytime soon, so I might try to do a gradient library panel. Like I said tho, is all time dependant on real life.

On a personal note I would prefer gradients/palettes. It is easy enough to convert .png files to .jpg using Gimp if I need it. Any idea when you might be able to work on this, nudge nudge wink wink!

None of the suggestion here to import gradients work for Inkscape .46.
Win 7/10, Inkscape 0.92.2

I haven't tried myself, but what happens?

Well, nothing really. Attempting to open or to import one of the gradients, nothing appears to happen. No error is given and nothing on-screen changes. No gradients become available for the gradient tool.

Jan 31, 2011 here. I feel like I'm writing from the future...! Is it still advised to import from GIMP? I understand that it is dependent on someone actually making this change. Just legitimately wondering if there is a better way to hang on to work done creating neat gradients for use later. I prefer using Inkscape rather than GIMP whenever possible. ;)

Thanks :) Love Inkscape! Thank You!

Hi xroox,
afaik, gradients created in GIMP can still be imported to Inkscape. I did it once in recent memory, but unfortunately, poor memory and I don't remember HOW I did it, lol!

its as simple as file>import then select Gimp Gradient (*.GGR) from the filetype list.
