She Hellraiser [Not safe for work]

Postby microUgly » Sat Jun 09, 2012 3:39 pm

Pencils: Image Hellraiser...Pinhead?
Blood splatter: Splatter Brushes

I had 90% done within a week or two, but then got the chains which I didn't have the patience for :) 10 months later and it is done.

Checkout wardog-zero's gallery for other excellent female versions of horror characters.

Very well done, micro!
Definitely should be viewed at it's full size, for best effects. And the chains were worth the wait :D

I thought it was almost too bright :D I spent a lot of time looking at references--I've never actually seen the movies. But the costume is black and the details are lost in the typical shots from the movie. I tried hard to replicate how dark the costume is without loosing the detail.

But I do appreciate your feedback... it help me to look at what I've done and what I could do differently.

You failed ;)
miserably ;) ;)

As you said the costume should be darker but then the audience will not be able to see the details (and I'm sure you put a lot of work in it (I guess you did but I only can see the preview))
What works in a movie (because the suit is moving, because you "follow" the character for a certain amount of time, because the whole scene is dark except rare lights that hit the suit with different angles) doesn't work in a static image.

Maybe you could try to make it an hell character (red suit over a black background (or the opposite))
or add a second light source (red ?) on the left ?

The tools on the belt are too "vertical" they don't follow ths skirt

Maybe It's just a great picture and it's only my screen gamma that is fucked up :)

Not that I've ever seen a tool like those, lol. But I think the vertical line of the tools indicates that they have weight, which is what one would expect of a tool with a metal (presumably steel) blade and wood handle. If they followed the line of the skirt, they would look lightweight, or maybe even plastic. I could see them following the line of the skirt, a little, if she were in a very active pose (like a kung-fu kick or something), which would emphasize movement. But there is very little movement indicated.

Neither am I familiar with the subject, the character or source of colors. But you could not go any darker, without losing the cool pattern on the sleeves. Already I have to look at the full size, to see the details. Again, not that I'm a fan of this subject, but I do recognize skill with Inkscape. In that vein, I was thinking it might look cool to replace the sleeves with tatoos. So that it's more of a sleeveless dress, except for a cap sleeve (short sleeve, there's a pointed thing there, if you look at the full size, that could be called a cap sleeve). Then the arms would be tatooed with the pattern on the current sleeve. And neither am I a fan of tatoos, and I doubt one would ever actually see such a tatoo in real life. But it's a cartoon anyway.

If I changed anything, I would make the cube.....either be a little more reflective, or maybe even have a slight glow.

I agree but I don't think she's wearing lightweight cotton skirt but rather some thick leather one. So If there are folds in the skirt I think the "tools" should fit into them.

I think you are correct that technically, the tools would or should be displaced by the contours of the dress. Although, I should stress that I did not draw the character--I've only coloured her. It's a great looking character and the full credit for that belongs to wardog-zero.

When I colour someones drawing, I like to remain true to both the source material (if it's not an original character) and the vision of the artist who drew it. It would feel disrespectful to deviate from that. So it was important to me that the costume is what it is.

Although, if she did have full sleeve tatts, she would look a lot like Jack from Mass Effect :D
