Just wondering how to use auto scroll in inkscape?
Im placing down nodes... i get to the edge of the screen....no scroll?
Auto Scroll...How?
Re: Auto Scroll...How?
Do you have a middle mouse button? Use it to pan canvas
There's also a preference in Inkscape to use Space + left-click to pan the canvas if you wish.

Re: Auto Scroll...How?
No a 2 button mouse....
I was hoping there was an auto scroll option ie that actually happened automatically.
The automatic part is kinda the important part of the auto i find...
I.E that kicks in (whilst creating a path) when you get a set distance from the edge of the workspace and automatically pans the screen in the direction your moving in ETC....
Im not a fan of having to initiate so called "auto" stuff......

Yuck. Some ancient thing with a ball and 400dpi huh?
Get a new one. You can get a pretty good mouse for as little as 20 bucks. Or a somewhat usable one for 8.
A mouse should have at least 4 buttons. That's the minimum you need for browsing around. MMB opens links in a new tab and you can also close tabs that way (you can disable the close button on the tabs) and the 4th is back (5th is forward, but that's not really important).
Just in case... you do know that if there is a wheel there is a 3rd button (the wheel itself), right?

Wow. I didn't realise Inkscape didn't do that and I never missed it. I guess it's really not needed with a middle-mouse, but I can appreciate how you would miss it. I recommend doing prkos with the space bar--it's a common control in other graphics software also, and provides a faster and more accurate pan than autoscrolling. I always found autoscrolling in Illustrator clumsy and irritating, but I continued to use it because it was there.

Dude that's what i call "techno-snobbery" LOL....
I got the same response when i was 15 years old riding down the road on my malvernstar...
In this case the hecklers will be shouting "get a 4 button you looser"....
I got to get going now: there's a hair ball forming on my "X roller" and i got to scrape that sucker clean with the pointy bit of my biro top...
P.S pressing the wheel zooms in....
And you should change the name of auto scroll to "manually initiated pre-set scroll increment" that rings true.... and it rolls right off the tongue...

Yeah allot of people don't use this but then again i think a good deal of people would too..(enough to implement it anyway)..
And i don't think it would be too difficult (I'll send you the code )
Anyway being a digitizer by trade the technique revolves around speed...and from this perspective I'm not a big fan of anything that introduces un-necessary steps... ill have to see how much i like how inkscape is set up now...
But i have to admit im not a fan of setups that require the excessive use of the keyboard....scrolling being such an excess...
Or for that matter requiring one to click....perhaps a kind developer will take pity and slide this one sideways into v.47?
PPS...
I think you need a new emoticon ....."Raising one eyebrow...." you know the expression i mean.....tis a good one to add in there.....
Re: Auto Scroll...How?
Inkscape autoscrolls when you are dragging or drawing something, and therefore cannot use normal scrolling methods. But in Pen, even when you are looking for place for the next node, all the normal scrolling methods work (middle button, ctrl+arrows, scrollbars) so there's no need to autoscroll.

Sort of... middle click zooms in. MMB drag, however, drags the canvas.

Inkscape does not have AUTOSCOLL (Proper)
Thats very handy...
And things like that actually do make a difference......(and no-doubt i will use that so thanks for informing me)
however there is nothing in inkscape currently (that i am aware of) that could REALLY literally (by rights) be called an AUTOSCROLL...
As no functions actually make scrolling happen automatically and instead relys on the user clicking something ETC...
That is not AUTO.....
It is one thing for you to argue that such a genuinely automatic scrolling function is not required,,,,,(I would not agree)
it is another to call something that does not happen automatically "AUTO"... .
Anyway my point is i guess i would like this functionality...perhaps you wouldnt use it...(along with many others)
But allot would (me included.)

Re: Auto Scroll...How?
Yes it is autoscroll. Drag on canvas in Selector and go up to the edge - it will scroll. Did you scroll it? No. It autoscrolled to help you do what you're doing.

Oh.... ok whist dragging an object you mean...when you hit the edge of the screen
To be more specific i am referring to scrolling that helps you when you are creating a path and you get to the edge of the screen.
I.E it is obvious that having the workspace drag with the mouse is not applicable here as you need to see where you are going to create a path properly....
So specifically my proposal in this regard http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/User_talk:Davidhewitt#Auto-Scroll_that_happens_automatically... explains it...
I haven't linked it yet...
But in a nut shell when creating a path...when you get to the edge of the screen ...the autoscroll kicks in and centers you automatically.....ie in one simultaneous jump....
A bit jarring if your not expecting it but you very quickly come to expect it and rely on it...
and once your are used to it you resent having to drag or do anything manually again....(most people will love it)
