How to display an object's Title or Description?

Postby Apprentice Human » Sat Sep 05, 2015 6:47 am

It's been years since I use Inkscape last and I've just started using v0.91. I used to be able display an object's title or description. There was a property box that allowed you to choose the type of placement (sandwich board, north, south, etc.). I've looked all over for this function and can't find it.

I've tried looking for extensions, in case I had installed something that gave this sort of functionality. Alas, I've found nothing.

I'm hoping someone can either tell me what I've missed or tell me that the function isn't supported anymore.

Many thanks!

If you mean entering object property values that appear as tooltips in a browser...

I'd select any object and [Shift+Crtl+O] to open the object properties panel, then enter a value in the Title field, click the Set button and save. That gets the basic tooltips.

I don't see any tools for style or position.

To get fancy, there are a few blogs on the subject, e.g.

Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Or could you be looking for Resize Page to Content? In Document Properties > Page tab > Custom Size > Resize Page to Content, you can find Top, Bottom, Left and Right fields where you can enter margins. So to place the image on the right side of the page, give a large value in the Left field.

I actually don't know what a "sandwich board" is.

There's a place to put title and description in the metadata, which in 0.91 is a tab in Document Properties.

Did anyone have any luck on this one?

I'm not talking about tooltips. I'd like a label to be displayed on a shape which is fetched from the shape's properties.

I don't see what page margins have to do with it...

Well sometimes people come up with the oddest explanation of what they want to do, so I was just trying to think of any place where top, bottom, etc. is available.

Do you want this to happen on a webpage? Or in Inkscape? Somewhere else?

As far as I know, you would need some kind of custom script to do this.
