Different way to edit appearance of image without changing stroke width?

Postby eeb » Thu Jun 01, 2017 1:15 pm

Hello, all! I'm very new to Inkscape so I hope I can explain this well enough

I have created an image of a turtle shell, with the pieces spaced out from each other. This picture is an example of what I am talking about (this is just a random one I found on the internet to use as the example; mine is a svg.) Mine has much thicker white spaces between each piece. I achieved that solely by increasing the width of the stroke. My question is: is there another way to achieve this same effect?

If you want to know the actual reason for my request:
I tried to upload the vector image into Cricut Design Space to use with my cutter. It does not recognize any changes in the stroke width. The image and shape looks just fine, but the spacing is much smaller. (I tried a few different images with varying widths just to see, and all ended up the same- though I'm not really sure how their program decided what default size to use...). I'm just trying to find something that will work! :?

Hi.
When I read about Cutter I guess you might want to cut on each side of a line - in this case you´ll have to change contours into paths.
This is a quick autotraced unpolished svg. Do you think this will work?

Cheers

@ eeb,

Generally speaking, cutters don't recognize strokes, they only look at the underlying paths. So, when we want to reduce/increase spaces like the white gaps in the turtle shell, we often edit the paths by hand or with tools like inset/outset.

Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Sorry, guys- I didn't realize I had received replies. I just assumed no one commented!

Thank you so much! I ended up playing around with it for a terrible amount of time, and got it to work like I wanted. I couldn't even tell you what I did, at this point!

@Polygon, yes, thank you! That is pretty much exactly what I wanted to do. I've gotten a slightly better grasp on vectors than I had at the time of my original post

@Tylerdurden, thank you! That was exactly the answer to my question! I wish I'd known I had a reply! :( My experience with Inkscape (even now) is getting an idea and pretty much just blindly playing around with the program to achieve it. I've never used the inset/offset options... that will help tremendously in several of my current projects! Thanks so much!

You can use the manual from Help menu > Inkscape Manual.
