Re: putting on path.
Hi. ^^
Sorry to say I'm not 100% sure of what you mean. But if you're saying you drew an arrow shape, then wanted that arrow shape to repeat along a squiggly line or something, then there's definitely a solution for you. ^^b
I hear it's a lot easier in 0.47, but haven't had much time to play with it -- however, prior to that I would select both the line and the arrow , and then use a tool under Extensions > Generate from Path > Pattern Along Path... in order to get the arrow repeated accordingly. (naturally, you would have to play around with the settings a little to get the desired effect.
Someone can probably chime in on how this works in the newer versions.

Re: putting on path.
You can still do it the same way. But in 0.47 we have Live Path Effects. Unfortunately, I haven't learned how to use that feature yet. But depending how complex you need to make your effect, it might be the better choice. But you can still do it in the same way c-quel described

Re: putting on path.
method1
1). create 1-st path (arrow)
2). create 2-nd path
3). copy 1-st path to clipboard
4). select 2-nd path
5). open path effect editor
6). apply path effect "pattern along path"
7). press "paste path" button and play with options until you get what you want
method2
1). create 1-st path (arrow)
2). create 2-nd path
3). select 1-st path
4). reise it on top (or just 1 step. the "pattern" path must be a level higher than "path" path for some reason)
5). select both pathes
6). choose extensions->generate from path->pattern along path
7). check "live preview" checkbox
8). play with options until you get what you want
9). press "apply"
Basically, both methods work equally. But the second one is more buggy and requires more time...
