Inkscape keeps running in background even though programme closed
Inkscape keeps running in background even though programme closed
Several times now when I have closed down Inkscape the programme still keeps running in the background. There is no obvious evidence of this on the desktop however the laptop sounds as though it's working hard.
On investigating the Task Manager I find that Inkscape is still running and using up loads of Memory.
Why is this happening and what can I do to stop it?
Using: Windows 8.1
Inkscape Vers .92
Thanks in advance.

Re: Inkscape keeps running in background even though programme closed
That does sound odd!
Before you closed it, had you asked Inkscape to save a large file, or follow some kind of command that would require a lot of work?
Do you use Inkscape with a graphics tablet? (not ipad type of tablet)
When you see it in the Task Manager, is it on the Applications tab? Or do you see inkscape.exe on the Processes tab?
And you're sure you don't have any instances of Inkscape that are still open?
I think this should definitely be reported to developers! Have you ever made a bug report before? I could make the report for you. But it would be better if you registered on Launchpad anyway, because developers will certainly have questions for you, that I wouldn't be able to answer. We could do back and forth, if you don't want to reg a new account there. But if questions come up in a few months....well, it would be better if you had your own account. (Best to use a working email address too, because LP will automatically send you a message when someone replies.)
https://launchpad.net/inkscape
And meanwhile, you know how to stop Inkscape from the task manager, right? Until developers can figure this out, that's going to be the only way to stop it from running. If you don't know how, I can tell you. But I need to know if it's showing on the Applications tab or Processes tab.

Re: Inkscape keeps running in background even though programme closed
Thanks Brynn for your very speedy response.
Inkscape is showing in the Process (Background) Tab
I use Inkscape with a mouse and not a graphics tablet.
Quite sure there are no Inkscape files open.
And no, I've not been working with large files...
And yes, when I stop the process in the Task Manager, the laptop stops having to work so hard
Reporting items to developers... nope, I've not done this before. I'm not very technically adept but I'll give it a go. And I'll keep you posted.
And thanks again for your quick response.

Are you running any extensions during your use of Inkscape, perhaps?
Which ones?
(might be a known issue)

Here is the link to my query on LunchPad -
https://answers.launchpad.net/inkscape/+question/644365
And Moini - no, I don't usually use extensions. I may have played around with a couple of Filters this time, but when I close the file down surely the programme closes down as well?

Awesome!
I went a step further, and made a full-on bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1699494
So....hhm, I'm not sure if you'll still get emails about replies to the bug report, because I automatically created it from the Answers post. You might need to visit the bug report page, and look in the column on the right, where it either says "You are...." or "You are not subscribed....". If it says "not" you can click on the text, and it will switch to "you are....". And that will make sure you get notified.

Just to say that this issue is still happening. Inkscape is still running even when I close it down - not every time but enough times to be annoying. - Caroline
Re: Inkscape keeps running in background even though programme closed
Have you checked if it's triggered by running an extension? Perhaps one that doesn't come with Inkscape?

Re: Inkscape keeps running in background even though programme closed
Oh, sorry :-/
When you are using Inkscape, are you sure you're never using any extensions before you get that background process?
E.g. are you saving to a specific export file format, for example? Are you using one of the extensions listed in the extensions menu?
(I'm asking this because there's a known issue with some extensions on Windows, or with calling Inkscape from the command line on Windows (which some extensions do), that produces Inkscape instances that don't quit).

Hi Moini - I'm not a very technical person lol. A 60 year old who stumbled upon Inkscape, decided to teach myself how to use it but every now and then it does funky things that throw me!
No, I'm not using any extensions.. thanks so much for your help

Re: Inkscape keeps running in background even though programme closed
Any update on this? I have the same problem while using Inkscape to arrange graphs for a multipanel figure. The only things I do are the following in Windows 10:
- importing vector graphics PDFs using poppler (the internal option doesn't work for my PDFs). These are scatter plots made in Matlab with several thousand points, which takes a while to import and manipulate in Inkscape (eg. changing the position of the whole group).
- moving the imported groups (graphs) into a panel layout
- adding text labels (A,B,C,etc)
- saving a copy as PDF
Problem is, it doesn't happen every time - it seems to happen if I've been working on several different files for a while...

Re: Inkscape keeps running in background even though programme closed
Please tell us which version of Inkscape you're using.
No, there doesn't seem to be any update. The last message in the report is asking if it's still a problem. So developers will be interested to know if this is happening in the current stable version.
If you're not using 0.92.4, you might want to try it.
