sK1 team released a new version of UniConvertor which is used by Inkscape for importing CDR (Corel DRAW), WMF (Windows Metafiles) and suchlike.
The Windows users among you will be pleased to find:
1. MSI installer
2. Windows file manager integration
3. A script that patches existing Inkscape installation to use the new external version instead of older non-working internal
The integration bit is related to another new feature: a simple graphical user interface.
Other changes include major internal refactoring, better fonts handling, better color management, more importers (especially embroidery and cutting plotters) and so on. Detailed illustrated review is here.
You can download the new version for your operation system here.

Thanks for the info, prokoudine!
If I understand what you're saying, then I assume that this new version will be included with future releases of Inkscape?
But that people who are currently having trouble opening CDR, WMF, etc, (which we get messages about all the time) can download it and add it manually to Inkscape? Is that how it works? If so, are there any special instructions for installing? Or do you just install it to your OS, and Inkscape finds it when needed?

I very much hope that this will be the case. developers have already been notified on the new release, but no further discussion unfolded, so maybe I will have to make a little push

You just need to read the notes about the script that patches existing internal copy of UC in Inkscape and apply the patch. The review specifically mentions where to find the notes
